This worked well since anyone that logged into that computer had a printer near by. Lately, I have had a surge of tickets. Users are looking to print but must be an admin in order to add the driver. Let me add a screen shot of this.
I cannot figure this one out. It might be related to recent windows updates. We were the lucky holders of some Kyocera and Zebra printers that would crash windows if you hit print. Now it seems like we are the luck winners of installing printers as admin.
While the print server is where jobs are managed, you still need the driver on the client. To install drivers, you need admin rights unless you set a GPO that will allow them to. Hold on, let me find it.
Computer Configuration > Policies > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options > Devices: Prevent users from installing printer drivers
For a computer to print to a shared printer, the driver for that shared printer must be installed on the local computer. This security setting determines who is allowed to install a printer driver as part of connecting to a shared printer. If this setting is enabled, only Administrators can install a printer driver as part of connecting to a shared printer. If this setting is disabled, any user can install a printer driver as part of connecting to a shared printer.
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Printers > Point and Print Restrictions
-Under this policy, I have the two options set for installing or updating drivers to not show warning or elevation prompt.
There is some truth to this but even though you I got a prompt to install the driver in testing, admin rights were not required. I was able to hit install driver(even though it had a shield on the OK button) and it worked fine.
@alanmorris, I looked at the setting you mentioned, and it is false. Now just to clarify, you said if trusted it would prompt for creds. Should it not be the other way around, meaning if not trusted, then prompt?
A Package Aware print driver contains the print processor, the language monitor, the print driver, and a certificate file. Until late 2016, Microsoft allowed the certificate as long as it was valid but due to some concerns that the certs where not signed by MS, a security change caused the issue you are encountering now. This is discussed by Microsoft here:
Now, a package aware print driver can be installed onto a print server which supports the Package design using a client machine which does not support the design and this will install the driver in a way which does not contain all the package so, If this driver was installed using Server 2003 or from a 2003 print server migrated to your current print server, then the package would be broken.
I looked for an IR-Adv C5535 driver and found the Generic PS3 driver for the C5535i. That driver is package aware so it may benefit you to test this print driver to work around the requirement for preinstalling the print driver or giving the users admin rights to the systems.
So we are seeing an issue where every now and then certain computers are asking for an admin name and password to allow it to continue printing. It almost seems it happens when the printer pauses or has an error and then requires the admin credentials to resume but I'm not positive about that yet.
Run once. Create a new policy, Configure Files and Processes, drop the one line in there and scope it to what works for you. Can even set it up for first run script if you have that in your work flow on new imaging units.
millersc can you give me some more specifics about this script. After creating the policy under general should login and startup be checked along with enable and activation dates? On the Files and Process tab is the script only needed in the execute command area and the rest of the page can remain blank? Then scope it to a group of computers and all users, or do I only have to scope it to the machine because it is executing at the root level?

I use a password manager, so I generated a password with my password manager and then copied it into the admin password field. When I saved my settings the web page refreshed and asked for my password to manage the printer, just as expected, however, when I once again pasted the password that was previously generated the printer just tells me that I have entered the wrong password.
Thank you for your reply. I have already restored WiFi settings, but that does not change the fact that I cannot configure any other settings on the printer since it is admin locked (and not accepting the password that actually is correct). This did sadly not help me with removing the administrator password on the printer.
I am prompted to this when I try to print from any Apple device (MacBook Pro, IPads, and IPhones) however it works fine with my DELL lap top which is running Windows 7. It was working fine until I moved and connect to a new wi-fi. I almost tried everything, delete the printer and reinstall it, reset the printer, tried combinations of username and passwords, but nothing happened. This applies for the wi-fi print, direct print, and even USB connection. Only e-print is working via the email.
Do you use iCloud Keychain? If so, open Keychain Access on your Mac and update the login and password for your printer and see if this has any impact on the issue. These links can help with this step:
Thanks for your advice, but nothing is working even with the password listed on the key chain I still can't figure out what is the user name. I tried most of the combinations. For the other notes; there is no other user account on my Mac and the problem exists on the safe mode.
It is endless. I tried everything but still the same, I can't figure out the username / password configuration. I think the issue is related to HP software, the device is working very well as a scanner and for the e-print but the direct print and wireless still have the same issue on all my apple devices. Today I tried to reset the printer and remove it from all the devices then I used a different MacBook Air which was not connected to this printer or to the network before, the result was the same: asking for username and password.
I noticed the other day that my Orbi satellite wasn't working so I attempted to log in to the app. The app asks me for admin credentials and when I put in "password" or my Netgear password it tells me that it's incorrect. It will not allow me to change the username either. I have tried logging in to routerlogin.net and routerlogin.com and they give me a pop up add for Circle and then a 400 error. At this point my satelitte isn't working at all and I can't get access to reset it.
To be perfectly honest, I have never set up an Orbi router using the Orbi "app" (and don't want to). So, I cannot comment on whether the app badgers users to change the web interface password (or not).
I am continually annoyed that every time the Orbi app gets updated on my Android devices, I am forced to enter login credentials. The app always offers me a choice of "admin" or an old email account that I lost access to years ago, and I have to enter the correct Netgear login email account/password. After that, the app opens by itself as expected.
I've had this Orbi system maybe 5 years and I've never had an issue with the app and being able to use it. I don't have the specifics on the system at the moment but I can tell you that my app does not give an option for the log in. It says "admin" and it isn't able to be deleted. So basically my app is a waste and I cannot find a contact number for Orbi customer support to help solve the issue. I have loved my Orbi system but honestly I am considering finding something else since I can't find someone in customer service to help
Thanks for the information. Alas, Netgear provides 90 days of "complimentary support" with a router purchase, which appears to have ended 4 1/2 years ago. Netgear has a subsidiary called GearHead that offers telephone support for a fee:
Print server, client prompted to update driver but can't because now they need admin rights. what to do?
We can't give users admin rights, thats the quickest way to get hacked, spread a virus, etc.
no users have admin rights.
Is there a way to stop automatic driver prompt from a network printer until this is sorted?
we dont want users prompted for a driver update?
we didnt update a printer driver, it just was maybe requested from client?
After the installation of Microsoft patch KB3170455, users may get prompted to enter an admin username and password, even though in Group Policy it's set so that these drivers should install without such credentials.
There is a 'workaround', which will allow the install of the network printer, without asking for credentials.
If the server has drivers for x86 and x64 installed, then there are two keys for each driver, hence: The following change needs to be done for both versions of the driver
2. In the right hand column of Regedit, double click the key PrinterDriverAttributes and add a 1 to the end of the 'Data value:'.
3. Close Regedit and restart the Printer Spooler service for the registry change to take effect.
