The settlement requires the Bay Area companies to pay $136 million to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and $34 million to the New York Attorney General for allegedly violating the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by using cookies to deliver targeted ads to viewers of child-directed channels, without first notifying parents and getting their consent. COPPA is designed to protect the privacy of children under 13. The penalty is by far the largest the FTC has ever obtained in a COPPA case since Congress enacted the law in 1998. "YouTube touted its popularity with children to prospective corporate clients," said FTC Chairman Joe Simons. "Yet when it came to complying with COPPA, the company refused to acknowledge that portions of its platform were clearly directed to kids. There's no excuse for YouTube's violations of the law." https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/press-releases/2019/09/google-youtube-will-pay-record-170-million-alleged-violations __________________________ o S.F.-Based Ginger Lands $35 Million for On-Demand Behavioral Healthcare San Francisco -- Ginger, a San Francisco-based provider of on-demand behavioral healthcare to people in need of emotional and mental health support, said on Wednesday it has landed $35 million in its third round of funding, led by WP Global Partners.
