Hi all!

I apologize for the late notice on this! This is being organized with the State.  Secretary Tepper  and Commissioner Arrigo will be in attendance and speaking.  If we’d like to have MyRWA, Walk Medford or the Bicycle Advisory Commission say a few words as well, please let me know ASAP!

(MEDFORD) — The City of Medford and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on the Clippership Connector Pedestrian Path Project on Thursday, November 2 at 12 p.m. at Riverbend Park, Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn announced.

The Clippership Connector will be a path located along Mystic River, between Clippership Drive and Riverbend Park. This half-mile waterfront path will connect more than 10 miles of contiguous greenways and aims to provide a safer route between Medford Square, Andrews and McGlynn Schools, and Riverbend Park. This project is a partnership between the DCR, the City of Medford, the Mystic River Watershed Association, and WalkMedford through the DCR Partnership Grant Program.

“Over the past three years, we made a concerted effort to create safe accessible routes for cyclists and pedestrians allowing for more environmentally friendly travel in and around Medford,” said Mayor Lungo-Koehn. “We have the opportunity to activate our riverfront space by connecting two of our more unique and desirable open spaces with this important connecting path project. Thank you to Mayor Stephanie Burke and her team for securing a DCR planning grant in 2016 to get this process started. We are thrilled to continue our work with DCR and our local partners to create this space for Medford residents and visitors to enjoy.”

“The Clippership Connector project was the vision of residents and walking and biking advocates who have been working with the city for over 7 years to open up this safe route for all ages along the river,” said Alicia Hunt, Director of Planning, Development, and Sustainability. “Connecting Medford Square the Senior Center to Riverbend Park and the Middle School Complex will provide new opportunities for exercise and a safer way for our students to access Medford Square. This project is a win-win for students, parents, seniors and business owners, and it will have a generational impact on Medford, leading to more thoughtful development in Medford Square, more accessible transportation options for our residents and a more productive use of our open spaces.”

The design of the path is funded through a DCR 2017 Partnership Grant and Wegman’s and the Solomon Foundation each provided funding to support Medford’s share of the partnership. In 2019, the city received a second DCR Partnership Grant to continue the design and engineering. The 2019 grant was matched by a donation from the Solomon Foundation and a Cummings Foundation grant. DCR has committed to funding the full amount of the construction costs, and they have received a Federal Land and Water Grant to support their costs.
