Hello WalkMedford!!!

It's been a while, and I'd like to acknowledge things have been quieter this year.
Our main organizers were quite busy in the fall and beyond, and regular meetings have not been scheduled; but I'd like to begin these again as we need some new energy to continue some of the work that was done last year; including our walk along Mystic Valley Parkway; and the Clippership Connector. I hope to schedule one soon.

We'd like to build up a few more people who are regularly advocating on these issues in Medford.
Feel free to reach out if there's another issue you'd like to discuss or advocate for.

In addition, Medford still hasn't hired a second traffic engineer since the departure of Amy Ingles, who did such great work in the city while she was here. We love and appreciate deeply our very hardworking Todd Blake, but only one traffic engineer isn't enough for all the work that needs to be done, and grants applied for, in the city.
It's unclear why this vacancy is still unfilled, but we encourage you to ask the mayor and/or city councilors what the plan is for expanding city staff that can continue to plan, design and carry out safe street infrastructure and quick build changes.

However, there is some important news and action items at the moment.

1) At long last, there is a ...
MassDOT Public Informational Meeting:
Medford Main Street Intersection Improvements

What is happening?
A Live Virtual Public Informational Meeting will be hosted to present the design for the proposed Intersection Improvements at Main Street/South Street, Main Street/Mystic Valley Parkway (Route 16) Ramps, and Main Street/Mystic Avenue project in Medford, MA. The purpose of this meeting is to provide the public with the opportunity to become fully acquainted with the proposed Intersection Improvements at Main Street/South Street, Main Street/Mystic Valley Parkway Ramps, and Main
Street/Mystic Avenue project. All views and comments submitted in response to the meeting will be reviewed and considered to the maximum extent possible.

How will this affect you?
The proposed project consists of intersection improvements on Main Street at South Street, Mystic Valley Parkway (Route 16) Ramps, and Mystic Avenue with traffic signals and signalized crosswalks. Main Street at Emerson Street will also be receiving a signalized crosswalk. Bicycle accommodations will be provided with a shared-use-path under the Mystic Valley Parkway overpass and continue with buffered bicycle lanes through the Mystic Avenue intersection. New ADA-compliant sidewalks and pedestrian ramps will be installed on both sides of Main Street.

  • WalkMedford will be pointing out that the Clippership Connector will terminate near this intersection, and that Main St. remains the last leg that creates a real obstacle for cyclists who aren't comfortable crossing a busy street. Please add this point to your comments!

2) Mystic River Watershed Association is pushing out a survey to hear folks' preference on three conceptual design alternatives for the Path Improvements Project MRWA are working on for DCR at the Mystic Lakes!
They are hoping to have responses recorded by the end of next Thursday, May 2nd.

You can review the materials from MRWA's second public meeting below and respond to the survey here: https://forms.gle/JeCxs61BsvgBmZyV6

Meeting Recording: https://youtu.be/rE8nC4j23Ao

Additional information and all of the materials from these meetings is available at mysticriver.org/mysticlakespath
MWRA encourages you to share the survey and any of the materials above with your family, friends, and neighbors.

3) Boston MPO has a survey on bike lane parking. Feel free to fill it out here;

4) Lastly, May 1 is MA Walk and Bike to School Day. All four elementary schools will be participating and there will be bike trains running to the middle schools. We encourage our high schoolers to walk, cycle or take transit that day as well.

Happy Steps, all!!!

Yours on foot,
