I live in Wicker Park (Augusta and Damen). Where is a good place to
run? I hate the lakefront bike path as it is crowded and filled with
self-absorbed humans who know very little of courtesy. I run in my
area, but it's still a bite with stop lights, pot holes, and the fear
of getting hit by a stray bullet if you go too far in any direction.

So where is good? I'd rather not trek out to the suburbs, but that's
what I do when I have runs over 10 miles.

Hi Addie, Have you checked out the decommissioned train tracks that
run parallel to North Avenue? There is a project underway to convert
it into a running path - maybe five miles out and back of elevated,
lit, graveled running path. Right now the old tracks are there but
there is ample room to run. I've outlined the one way path here:

Let me know what you think. In the interests of safety I would
recommend running this during the day with a friend (or walking it)
just to get an idea of your comfort level with the route. I walked it
with some photography friends 8 months ago and besides some trash it
looked like a great place for a run.

I hear you about the lakefront bike path, but I fortunately now live
at the north end (like all the way up by Hollywood) and I have to say
it's FAR less crowded up there. If you're already willing to make a
trek, you might try driving a bit further north. Finding a good 10
mile stretch (or even 5 that you could loop back on will prove hard
though). My other 2 suggestions are also based on where I used to live
in the city. There's a great path along the river (again further
north) that my wife used to walk when training for the breast cancer 3-
day. I believe she used to start around Lawrence and walk north from
there. And I grew up kind of near(ish) Caldwell Woods which has a
wonderful walk/bike/run path that goes all the way north to the
Chicago Botanic Garden - it was never that crowded and I always felt
safe biking it when I was younger.

I think Addie was looking for help with routes - do you have anything
helpful from your knowledge of the area?
