I live in the middle of of North Carolina and have never been
particularly active. Then I met and married Chuck who always has been
active and became good friends with Ann who does walking marathons.
Ann suckered me into walking a half marathon with her in Myrtle Beach
this coming February. :-)
I find that having a goal gets me off the couch and on the road.
I have been using using a modified version of the beginners' training
plan from MarathonWalking.com (

schedule_ez_half.html) and am up to the 6-mile Saturday.
I do 3 miles, either on the track at work on my lunch hour or on the
treadmill at the gym I joined for bad weather days, M-W-F, long walk
on Saturday and then take T-Th-Sun off.
I've been quite pleasantly surprised by what has happened to my
metabolism, even on "off" days.
