The Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee met Monday, October 20 and meets every third Monday of the month. Any member of the public can speak to the commission and raise concerns about biking and walking in Nashville.

Many items were discussed and you can watch the video here:

The commission adopted two resolutions which are attached to this email (I hope).

At our last meeting a citizen brought to our attention the so called “Make Eye Contact” signs that have been placed at some crosswalks. We requested that NDOT report back on where they have placed these and give any evidence they actually make a difference.

We also questioned the NDOT response to the death of Dot Dobbins at the Greenway intersection on Third Avenue and made the following recommendations:

1.          That NDOT study the effectiveness of the existing stop signs and the rate of driver compliance in stopping for pedestrians

2.          That NDOT consider installation of vertical traffic calming elements along with these stop signs, including speed cushions or a raised crosswalk to control speeds and increase driver awareness

3.          That NDOT defer installation of a PHB at this location and instead use the available funds to identify a more appropriate location on our high injury network.

It was brought to our attention that Nashville Bike Fun, a non-profit organization operated by Commissioner K.J. Garner received an award from the Scene for “Best Way to Learn to Ride a Bike”.

Scene Award for Bike Fun

We also adopted a statement for October as Walk Month.

NDOT reported on several bureaucratic things including efforts on Safe Routes to Schools. At the last meeting we heard from several parents involved in the Bike Bus at Dan Mills Elementary School in Inglewood. We have urged NDOT and MNPS to assist this effort and perhaps replicate it in other schools. If you’re interested the bike bus will be discussed at a meeting of the Inglewood Neighborhood Association November 6 at 7 pm at Litton Gym at 4500 Gallatin Pike in Inglewood. There should be representatives from MNPS, NDOT and MNPD.  Zach Young, school board member for the area has agreed to attend.

There are three openings on the commission so if you’re interested you can apply here.  If you know the Mayor suggest that he appoint you.

It was not discussed at the meeting, but the commission’s charge is to make this a safer city for biking and walking. We are not on the list of safest cities in this article in Momentum Magazine, to no one’s surprise.

Just for the hell of it here is a rendering of the proposed Oracle bridge from Germantown to East Nashville.

Very pleased to see numerous improvements along S 11th St in East Nashville.

A stretch of road that has a single stop sign between Shelby and Woodland and has been treated by many as an extension of the Interstate system.

We had speed cushions installed about a month ago after a 2 year “backlog” and I am very pleased to see these incremental improvements to the safety of non-vehicular movement.
