See the story below about the impact on the Siegenthaler Bridge during construction of TPAC. Perhaps someone knows what this means. If anyone could attend the meeting at TPAC Thursday  at 2 pm  and report back that would be great.

One alternative would be to harden the “bike lanes” on KVB so they can actually be used without a willingness to die.  Connections to the bike/ped bridge are sketchy at best even thought it is a “greenway” according to the city. We were promised the greenway at Ascend will be upgraded and open 24/7 after Gaylord takes over January 1.

Zoom in: Some of Metro's costs are related to work on the Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge, next to the proposed site of the TPAC building.

  • Metro is responsible for its renovation as well as funding and constructing nearby road work, including sidewalks and bike lanes; relocation of a gas line; and ensuring TPAC has access to water and electrical utilities, O'Connell spokesperson Julie Smith says.
  • During construction, the city will ensure "continuous, but modified, access to the bridge via a new access point even during East Bank construction," Smith says.

We need to push back hard on any suggestions of closing the pedestrian bridge for any length of time. It has been clearly stated numerous times throughout this process that the bridge would not be closed during construction and access would be maintained at all times. This bridge is a public asset and is the only safe way across the river for people walking and biking.

I've had concerns all along about this bridge being co-opted for a private entrance to the stadium and do not support the current plans to extend it over East Bank Boulevard to end in stairs. Various configurations of ramps have also been shown, but these are preliminary and uncertain.

But what has been clear all along, in every public meeting, is that regardless of the final plans, access would be maintained for people to use it at all times, both during construction and after the completion of the project.

They started to walk this back yesterday in the EBDA meeting, when Ben York said a "full closure" of the bridge was a possibility and they were still working out details with TPAC and other stakeholders.

This should be a complete no go. This is our bridge. It's the only safe way across the river. KVB is never going to be safe enough for me to take my 4-year-old to daycare next to 6 lanes of high speed traffic.

I can't attend the meeting tomorrow due to work but have reached out to Councilmember Kupin with my concerns. If anyone is able to go please ask questions and report back.

I agree wholeheartedly. Closing the pedestrian bridge for any length of time would be a major step backwards for the effort to make Nashville more bikeable and walkable.
