Have any of you ever seen that huge swath of green to the Northwest of Nashville and wondered what kind of nice biking there must be?
A friend of mine went out there last Saturday. We biked out River Road and cut up Gibbs Road into the WMA. We then got turned back when we tried to bike back towards town on Headquarters road and had to add about 10 miles to our trip.
A few notes:
- Bikes are not really invited here. The area is for hunting primarily, and they tolerate a bit of hiking at non-hunting times.
- Several of the old jeep roads are marked "foot travel only". They only really want bikes on this road.
- The main road, Headquarters road, is open for bikes, but not during hunting season, when only hunters should be on the road. Currently if you have a hunting permit, you should be allowed on it, but they are moving to a lottery system where not all people with permits will be allowed on any given day.
- At any time, you should have a High Impact License. Each bike should have one.
- The manager, Eric Tummins, was very friendly. He can be reached at 615-294-5432.
- Here is the hunting guide with some information.
I would like to look into how other areas like this manage through traffic. The Area is not set up to have mountain bike trails like Montgomery Bell and Percy Warner, but it would be nice if you could roll through there on a tour.
