Bike and pedestrian street improvements and economic activity in NYC
Event Date: Thursday, February 21, 1:00 PM Central (2:00 PM Eastern)
A new study concludes that recent New York City street improvements, including bicycle lanes and pedestrian plazas constructed to replace parking spaces and lanes of traffic, did not impede economic growth.
Bennett Midland LLC, a public-sector consulting firm, developed and executed an innovative methodology using three data sources to quantify economic effects at a very granular level. Using a series of comparison areas to isolate the effects of the Department of Transportation’s improvements from other contemporaneous changes in the city, the study found evidence that the improvement projects may have contributed positively to economic activity in the neighborhoods around the improvement sites. Join Eric S. Lee and Ben Galeota-Sprung, president and principal respectively, of Bennett Midland LLC, to hear how these studies might be replicated in other communities.
