Thank you for your email regarding the Recreational Trails Program (RTP). I appreciated hearing from you.
As you know, Congress passed and the President recently signed the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21). MAP-21 is a two-year transportation bill providing funding for federal highway, transit, and safety programs through September 30, 2014. MAP-21 provides for the continuation of the RTP as it exists in current law and provides added flexibility for States to opt out if the Governor chooses.
Throughout my two terms as Governor, we’ve acquired more fishing, hunting, hiking and camping sites than any other administration in the history of our state. Montana will continue the RTP program and has no intention of opting out.Developing and maintaining recreational trails and trail-related facilities for the enjoyment of Montana citizens and visitors through the RTP will continue; rest assured that we will not be opting out of the RTP while I am Governor.
Thanks again for your letter.
Sincerely,

BRIAN SCHWEITZER
Governor
