Dear all,

just walked through and the deer feeders are piling bread on the stone stairs of the white house NE of the bridge. I was soaked and they were intimidating so I didn’t have the presence of mind to take down the plates but it’s a large iron-grey pickup. The whole herd is assembled. Looking for the city number now.

Thanks for this info. I made the mistake of approaching them and it didn’t go well. They can be aggressive. If anyone is interested in filings another complaint, I can provide the police report number from my encounter in March.

Is this the truck? Dream catcher in back window. Older couple.

Thanks! Yes, I’m pretty sure it is. And yes, middle-aged couple. I guess I should file a report if you’ve got your number.

Please keep posting when the deer feeders are in the ravine.   I would like to have a conversation with them one of these days, despite the warnings others have given about such interactions.

Clearly the deer feeders like the animals, or they wouldn't be doing this.  But the feeding endangers the deer as well as people.  The deer shouldn't be eating bread and they shouldn't be getting that cozy with people.

In addition, one of the does is sporting wounds that an  ODNR wildlife biologist looking at a photo attributed to other deer biting her -- something that happens in a feeding situation.

Feeding is not illegal, but the people could be moved along by littering or trespassing complaints.

I'm hoping if I showed them a photo of the deer with bite marks, they might stop.

Cindy,
Just want to add that a worrisome consequence of the deer feeders' activities is the fact that the fawns seem less cautious around humans and dogs than one would expect them to be. While walking Lucy, Mike has actually had fawns move towards him several times, perhaps because they now associate humans with food. They certainly don't display any concern about a man with a German Shepherd.

While the feeding isn't illegal, might the fact that it is an ongoing problem be enough to get someone from ODNR to pay a visit to these folks? There have been plenty of photos of the truck's license plate, and I thought these folks were "known" by the police because they feed at several locations. Frankly, I don't think it's wise for an individual to approach them "in the act," with or without photos.

ODNR doesn't have jurisdiction;  I was contacting it only to find out what was going on with the doe's coat.
The woman I spoke with did offer to come speak to residents about not feeding,  but as it isn't residents doing the feeding, I don't think we'd reach the right target.

She is going to send me some "Do not feed the wildlife" signs when they are back in stock.

If the people won't stop feeding on their own, we have to get police to understand it's not just us being a bunch of nuisances.  You shouldn't have deer that tame.

I saw them Saturday at about 5:45. They were there when I got to the ravine and still feeding them on my return trip. I told them they were dumping on private property. Of course, wouldn’t you know it was one of the few time I forgot to bring my phone.

And loose bread and veggies are also feeding the local rat population.

If ODNR can’t contact the people doing this, why can’t Columbus police since there are photos of the license plate?  They could cite them for littering and illegal dumping at least?  And perhaps the police could first speak with ODNR and have the information to pass on about the bad effect on the deer when feeding them and making them unafraid of people, and of the impact on increase in rats due to the food in the ravine.  Should we all be placing complaints with the police, and if so, should we all just call the general number 614-645-4545? Or should our liaison officer contact them?

Actually Walhalla is one of the few if maybe the only one of the ravines that is private property. Second this these deer feeders are not residents of Wahala either they just come and feed the deer.

It seems odd that there is no solution to this ongoing issue. If private property in the ravine extends to the street (with no easement), then aren't these folks trespassing? If so, perhaps "private property" and "no trespassing signs" are more appropriate than "don't feed the wildlife," and it becomes an issue for the folks whose property is being used as a feeding station. (Have those folks expressed a concern about the deer feeders? I admit I've lost track.)

And if there is city property along the sides of the street, and feeding the deer isn't illegal, then aren't we beating a dead horse unless we want to push the "littering" angle?

Sorry if I sound grumpy, but this just feels like a cyclical discussion that isn't going anywhere.....

Suzanne,

Your points are why I want to try to have a conversation with our police liaison. I know the city has more pressing issues than this,  but  we need to make the police see it's not just us being a bunch of nuisances.    I'll let you all know what  our neighborhood liaison says after I talk to him.

Ok, so I called police. They took forever to show up. In the meantime I stayed between the deer and the food, beating sticks together and playing the Clash on my phone. After about 30 minutes the truck left. I went back to house to get Kroger bag. I FILLED it with the food - bread, peanuts and apples. Then the police came. No help at all. Not sure it was even a crime if it was not my property. They were not sure it was even littering if it was just food. Said they thought it was an ODNR issue. So in the end, I made a difference for a day. The deer didn’t get the food, the people did not get to see the animals. Just after cops left I saw them farther back on the road... they stopped briefly to see food was gone.

In the end, probably not worth the effort.

Thanks for spending the time. ODNR  says absolutely it is not their jurisdiction, that city police should be enforcing littering, loitering, or other issues.
I am not certain the property owner needs to be the complainant for littering,  but that's one thing I want to talk to Officer Stacy about if he ever calls back.....

From google: feeding bread to deer is very bad for them and can be fatal. Bread is a processed carbohydrate that disrupts their delicate digestive system, causing severe bloating, metabolic issues, and a dangerous condition called rumen acidosis. It provides no proper nutrition and can lead to a slow, painful death.

When this issue arose a few years ago, police said they couldn't do much unless the property owner saw the feeding and complained.   But  they agreed that anyone seeing the feeding on private property could complain if the property owner had signed the attached form.    The form below allows someone other than the property owner to report the infraction. Many people along the ravine signed the form and I gave them to the city.

We have some new residents.  If you would like to sign the form and return it to me, I'll file it with the police. We have a new liaison now and I might need to remind him of the agreement.

As Rebecca said, the people have been aggressive.  I'd let the police do the work.  Be careful.

Last Wednesday when I took a ravine walk, there were three spots on the north side of Walhalla, west of Brynhild, where someone had spread corn kernels for the deer.

FYI- Please note that the interaction with the "aggressive" people that resulted in a police report was in March 2019, which also prompted the collection and filing of the Trespass reports.
I have not seen those people for quite some time.
