Dear all,

I just killed 3 spotted lanternflies in a cluster on the east side of Brynhild as I was heading into the ravine – I think I missed a 4th. I kept my eyes peeled on the rest of the walk and didn’t see any, including on the west side of Brynhild, but unfortunately this isn’t a first sighting – Mike found one dead in a spiderweb by our garage recently, and a friend who lives on Woodbine has found them on her grapevines. I take it they prefer sweet-smelling garden plants to native ones but no doubt their preferences adapt as their numbers grow. Apparently we should start looking for egg masses in October.

Here is some information:

The good news is that they are easy to see and slow-moving – they were hovering over the edge of the road and frequently landed on the ground, so you can just stomp them.

All the best,

Dorry

Thank you Dorothy.
We should also remove Tree of Heaven trees, their source of food.

Thanks for the heads-up, Dorry! The lantern flies that I've seen downtown move fast. It's been hard to stomp them.

Well this is interesting to wake up to. We had Eric from Ahlum and Arbor out last week and as we were walking around I saw one spotted lantern fly and mentioned it to him. He informed me that we have a tree of heaven on the ravine side of our property pretty close to the house but in a cluster of other trees as well. Diameter is probably around 10”. The base is covered in lantern flys!!!! I asked if we should have it removed and his answer was “if you don’t care about the tree I wouldn’t do anything about it” I took that to mean the lantern flys can be harmful to the tree of heaven but don’t bother anything else. Now I feel like I need to read a bit more about it. I did read the link that Mary Jo sent out and it sounds like when a tree of heaven is cut it will send out suckers so that seems detrimental to the idea of limiting the number of trees. I just went through the links Dorry sent re the lantern fly and I’ll have to do more digging because with our kids and the proximity to the house we can’t spray insecticides or herbicides. If anyone has other suggestions we are open!

Blueprint is removing Tree of Heaven along the Ravine proper, partly because the aggressive root systems are bad for both grey and brown water pipes and partly because the roots secrete and enzyme that inhibits the growth of other plants & trees needed for erosion control. So: they are evil buggers. They are also hard to remove and the earlier you get them, the better! Once they have an established root system, according to ODNR, you need to apply an herbicide directly to the stump to be rid of them.

We’ve been seeing, killing, and attempting to kill those lantern bugs on an almost-daily basis for the past two weeks down here on Walhalla right off of High. They have an annoying jump similar to that of grasshoppers, so it’s not always the easiest to keep eyes on them and then kill them (ie, if they jump into brush.) Looking forward to having the Tree of Heaven trees taken out down here. Hopefully, it makes a dent in these nasty lantern bugs.
