 Hi,  two reminders,

First, I'm getting our annual batch of free trees from Green Columbus on Thursday.

If we get everything we asked for, we should get:

Asimina triloba - Pawpaw
Calycanthus floridus - Common Sweetshrub
Cornus amomum - Silky Dogwood
Cornus foemina (racemosa) - Gray Dogwood
Hamamelis Virginiana - Witchhazel
Lindera benzoin - Spicebush

I'll be giving them out later that day and through the weekend.

Please email me (cindy....@gmail.com) directly with  orders now.  You don't have to be directly on the ravine to get these. They are to beautify the city, not just the ravine.

Second,  we will gather 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday to remove lesser celandine and maybe plant a few things.

Let's meet at the usual spot, under the Calumet Street bridge and I'll put you to work in a few places.

I can remove about a 5-gallon bucket of the stuff in 2 hours. Think how much we can do with a group.

The bribe?  I'll offer a jack-in-the-pulpit or a bluebell to anyone participating!

Hi there Cindy!

I'll see you there with spade in hand....but I'm pessimistic about removal of the Celandine.  Mine seems to have acheived immortal life.

I'm very excited that a number of the trees we planted last year are coming back.  Also, would love to have a few witchhazel and spicebushes!

Thanks!

Pari

I will give everyone a crash course in eradication.  I think the problem removing lesser celandine is not getting all the little bulblets forming.

Pari, that made me laugh! I was very fatalistic about lesser celandine for years and this year I decided to ATTACK IT. It's choking out EVERYTHING!! I use a shovel and dig four inches down, then remove the whole topsoil. It's the only way I've found to actually get rid of the tight mesh of roots and bulbs that covers the entire ground. Then I am going to seal up the remains into bags and have the carried far far away. I will just have to go back and plant new things in the areas where I've eradicated it. I've decided this is just the thing I do in my free time, for exercise and getting out aggression, etc. We'll see how successful I am, next year!

For our workday Sunday,  could everyone bring a sharp trowel?  I might have one or two to lend, but not enough to go around.

Pari, you won't need a spade.
