Good morning.

Around 10:20 last night, we heard a loud, random gun shot, then roughly 5-sec. of silence, then three additional gun shots fired back to back, as if something was being targeted. When we reviewed our ring footage, we heard the shots, of course, and then saw a male loudly running and giggling as he ran toward High Street. Our footage then showed that shortly after this, a blue car drove the wrong way up Walhalla, about 20 seconds passed, and it was then filmed driving the correct way back toward High Street.

My husband called the police and filed a report with the officers who arrived. It should be noted that the police found shell casings in the road.

We live two houses away from High Street, to give you an idea as to where this happened. Anyway, we thought we’d give you all a heads up about this, especially in case any of you receiving this are some of the people who like to take walks in the ravine once it’s completely dark. (We’ve noticed an increase in foot traffic over the past few weeks at night, for whatever crazy reason.)

Thank you Sarah for letting us know, and for calling the police. It's pretty scary.

Not sure if this is related but the timing tracks.
We were sitting on our back patio when we observed at least 3 people, with flashlights climbing the hill to the Conaway's/Mooney's. I thought it was silly bc they actually climbed the hill where there is a large patch of scrub instead of the stairs closer to the bridge and mentioned this to our guests. Within minutes, we thought we heard shouting and they immediately came barreling down the hill, same location, onto Walhalla and ran towards Indianola. We shouted at them, assuming it was just kids.

About 20 minutes later, we see the police presence ( 3 cars with spotlights). I thought the Conaway's may have called the police and we commented on the length of time it took the police to arrive. I even took a video which was timestamped at 10:31pm. I remember hearing what I dismissed as fireworks too.

Rebecca and Sarah,
Thank you so much for alerting us all. It's disturbing.  Hope the police are treating it seriously.

Who knows - it definitely could have been the same group, Rebecca, (although they would have had to run toward our house down by High Street rather than toward Indianola. Maybe they changed directions and came our way..?)

The gun shots happened at 10:18 and I misspoke when I originally said there were 4 gun shots; there were five. The video also clearly captures the man saying, “C’mon!” to someone before he runs past our driveway. No one followed him, which is why we think the car drove back to pick the other person or persons up, and then turned around before driving back to High St. I’ll attach a screenshot from the video of the car driving to pick their friends up, for what that’s worth.

All,

I had Orion, my AI assistant, enhance image to reveal the driver:

Maybe this will be helpful to someone.

Who knows, folks. Maybe this blue car simply made a wrong turn and had **nothing** to do with this situation at all…and was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Anyway, we’ll see what the police are able to find out. Have a good night, everyone.

Thanks, Jared. Your enhancement provides quite a good image of the driver, as well as of the car.

This is certainly a troubling situation.

Regarding the AI enhanced image, unfortunately AI tech enables us to imagine what a human driving the car might look like, but that is not a representation of reality. For example, in this photo, the driver is on the wrong side of the car. This represents what “a person” driving the car might look like, not what “the person who was actually at the wheel” looks like.

Wow, good detective work! I didn't even notice the driver was on the incorrect side in the 'enhanced' image. It goes to show that AI can be so deceptive.

This is deeply troubling. I'm glad no one was hurt. Let me know if there is anything you would like me to communicate to the city via the area commission.

Will... in trying to follow-up on this, I discovered that Clintonville's CPD liaison position is vacant (and I haven't heard back from the CLO sergeant).  Concern aboutthat vacancy would be worth raising in the context of CAC.

Thanks,
Jeff

Good afternoon all,

I am happy to share that there has been a new CLO hired for this area.  Her name is Officer Lisa Barbeau and she can be reached at lbar...@columbuspolice.org or 614-671-2258.  I believe she just started last week.

I just asked AI to just enhance the driver so maybe Ai was less concerned about the layout of car. I think regardless of what side of car (could be a British car for all we know?) it’s pretty impressive it was able to enhance the face that much. I see it as a tool and not and not absolute truth. If we see a blue car and this man driving it I think that’s a good clue it’s the suspect… but just my thoughts. If I see this car/man I will try to get license plate for us.

As the CAC commissioner you need to contact the city and find out what is happening. It is your responsibility to find out what is going on.

Will-you are our representative. You need to start taking responsibility as a commissioner.

Knowing a bit about signal processing (and trying to find patterns in crazy-noisy image data), a bit about computer graphics, and a bit about how AI works (and its amazing propensity to assert with great confidence the veracity of completely fabricated hallucinations), I agree with Scott: there's not nearly enough good data in that blur to pull that kind of an image out of it.  The AI generated something to literally "fill in the blanks" (something that it predicted was likely and that you were likely to be pleased with).

I asked chatgpt ("plus" version, 5.5 model) to enhance the image -- it gave me two different versions, one with extreme detail of the inside of the car, but with no one driving -- obviously based on its idea of what that make/model of the car's interior should look like.  The other has the blurry contents of the car's "interior" sharpened to a somewhat prettier blur (kind of like if there were crinkly silver sun shades in the windows).  It's now asking me which one I like better (so that I can help make its hallucinations more pleasing to the next user).  After asking it to spend more time enhancing (it "thought" for 1 minute, 34 seconds), it produced another slightly prettier interior blur, but reduced the glare on the passenger window and sharpened the reflection of the light (presumably from either the camera's IR light or whatever nearby street light). Those pretty blurs are essentially the limit of information (i.e., reality) still available in the original image; everything else is the AI's wishful thinking.

This whole affair is unsettling--both the gunshots themselves (which I totally agree DO need to be investigated, and promptly) AND the news that an enhancement of an stationary camera image that produced a clearly visible face of a driver of a car traveling through the ravine at the time in question is NOT that of the actual driver/possible perpetrator.  If it isn't the person who was actually driving that car, what was the point of putting up someone else's face and possibly implicating an innocent individual?

If anyone can explain this, I'd be grateful,
Ann Woods

Well, lesson learned after circling back with Orion — despite my request for a true image enhancement, it appears the AI instead generated facial detail based on inferences drawn from “noise, patterns, and shadows” in the original image rather than actually recovering reliably identifiable features of the driver. I circled back and interrogated him and his response is below. It seems to me like this isn’t a total “AI hallucination” but a best guess on his part. Sometimes we have to push back to get real answers out of our AI pals.

I apologize for any confusion or unnecessary discord this may have caused. My intent was simply to better understand what occurred, not to implicate any innocent person. I’ve been using and paying for top tier versions of AI for a while now so I am disappointed in his representation of this as an “enhancement” that I asked for.

At the end of the day, the real issue remains the reported violence in the ravine and ensuring that is properly investigated. image0.png
