tree of heaven regrowth; expect ribbons

Hello,  all,

I met this morning with Aaron Drewes, part of the engineering firm working with the city and its contractor to remove tree of heaven regrowth.  

We walked part of the ravine this morning and I pointed out areas of concern.  He is going to try to get Stantec to mark the trees of heaven that are resprouting for treatment so the contractor applying herbicide won't miss them.  

I don't know when that will happen, but don't worry if you see ribbons on trees or saplings in coming weeks.   

I will monitor because  don't want the contractor to miss any. The contract specifies it   will come out to treat only once more. 

With that in mind, you can help two ways:  One,  as awful as it is, please don't cut any tree of heaven regrowth.  I want Stantec to be able to see it all when its folks come out to mark.  

Two,  after the ribbons are up, please let me know if Stantec has missed some of the regrowth.  I'm asking that they give me ribbon to mark any that are overlooked. 

I have no idea when the herbicide will be applied. It might not be till fall.  

Also, I've talked extensively about application.  They will be doing extremely targeted spray of hand treatment to avoid killing nearby plants.  Walking the ravine this morning gave me a chance to show Aaron how a spray would kill plants like Virginia creeper under a tree.

Thanks Cindy ! Does anyone know the time of year you are supposed to apply treatment to kill them? ill wait to do it to the regrowth on my street, but my recollection is it needs to be done in the fall? I hate using chemicals anywhere near my house, but feel like this tree is a reasonable exception if done responsibility. 

Appreciate everything you do to keep invasive plants out of our neighborhood.

That answer is a little weather-dependent. Right now our plants are in the summer stall.  

September is probably the right time to treat.  You want temperatures to have lowered a bit but leaves to still be on trees. A bit of rain will help the situation, too.

Just looking for some clarification on how to mark the regrowth. We have tiny sprouts coming up easily 6 feet from where our tree was cut down and it’s into the walkway of our property. not just at the stump. There’s not the ability to tie a ribbon onto any of the regrowth because it’s mainly less than 8-10 inches tall.generally only a couple inches above the soil line. Are they visiting all of the sites where the trees have been marked for cut down to determine the need to spray?

Great question.  I will encourage them to walk all the affected properties, but I will also relay the info on your particular address.   The regrowth is definitely not all visible from the street. 

Shoots arising from the roots versus the stump is typical tree of heaven behavior unfortunately.

Please leave those little shoots.   

I'll get back to everyone when I find out whether they will walk all the properties.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, for your dedication to resolving this, among several other very scary problems now facing our beloved ravine. Let me know how I can help with any of these efforts.

As for my injuries--thank you, too, for reaching out to help (as if you needed more to do!)--I want to reassure you that, having finally gotten more accurate information about just what I injured and where, I have been able to move toward healing. First step has been to immobilize the injured part of my foot in a way that still lets me get around, albeit with a bit of a hobble. It seems I bruised my left wrist as well, and there too, an old arm brace squirreled away from a prior injury has again come to my aid. In short, I want to reassure you I'm all right. I even managed a quick trip to Aldi's yesterday for perishables.
