Hi, all,

If you remember back in March, we had a work crew from Stantec surveying the ravine to look for woody, invasive plants to remove from the right of way as part of the planned city's Walhalla Ravine Restoration project.

You've probably noticed pink ribbons on 41 larger trees -- mostly trees of heaven -- that will be removed,  although a timetable for removal has not been set.  Where trees are removed, the city will replant.  (I'm waiting to hear the choices that will be offered.)

In its survey, Stantec also identified a number of larger invasive trees and shrubs  -- 68 -- on adjacent private properties.  By larger, they mean the tree or shrub has a 3-inch diameter at chest height.  The city will be contacting property owners where the trees were found to ask for permission to work on the land.  Those requests are going out any day now.

The aim is to remove invasive plants that could repopulate areas that we've cleared of invasives, that the city is clearing of invasives for the project.  The trees targeted for removal are ones that are well beyond our local volunteers' capabilities of taking down safely, even if we wanted to.

The Stantec group even found one vine I didn't know we had, Oriental bittersweet, which is a killer if it takes hold. We will know now to watch for it.

Also,  in late June  the city is planning an update on Blueprint plans for Clintonville. Although Walhalla  will be part of that meeting,  its plans are unchanged from what we last saw.

The meeting is planned for 5:30 p.m. June 26 at North Broadway Methodist Church.  Light  refreshments will precede the meeting,  which starts at 6 p.m.

A 4-person team from Blueprint came around on Wednesday morning talking to Walhalla homeowners about removing invasive plants, e.g., tree of heaven, Morrow's honeysuckle, oriental bittersweet. They showed me an online map of the ravine with dots indicating the location of the invasives.
