Hello, everyone,

Garlic mustard has been spreading around the Walhalla Ravine. Garlic mustard inhibits tree growth, as well as crowding out wildflowers and other native plants.

Please pull it (or dig it)--with its roots--as soon as possible. Each plant can have between 400 and 800 seeds, seeds which can germinate for several years afterward.

Garlic mustard has a long season: it can bloom through the end of June. Regular pulling and discarding in the City's yard waste program can control its spread. Do NOT put this weed in your compost pile.

Thanks for caring!

I was reading in a library book- Foraging by Kit Carson that Garlic Mustard is Allopathic in that it’s roots produce toxins that inhibit native plant germination and kill essential mycorrhizal fungi that help trees and plants absorb water and nutrients. (Part of this is AI) It allows the plant to dominate forest understories

Garlic mustard was purportedly brought over as a potherb.  Lots of recipes for using it: https://share.google/aimode/rrO4Ngflyl992VuRt

It's edible in the first year stage. Some people make a kind of pesto with it.

The second year, the year it shoots up and bears the flowers, it's more bitter.
