Just came across the same symptoms on a Windows 2012 server. The fixes in this article worked. Windows Server Backup was functioning normally until I removed WSUS. After that, wbadmin.msc wouldn't launch, and removing/re-installing the WSB role wouldn't fix the problem.

Wbadmin.msc Snap-in Missing After Installing Windows Server Backup Feature

Windows Server 2012 - Standard (TR) server to add the Windows Server Backup feature, and even though I'm the manager at the Administrative tools in the Windows Server Backup application can not see. Copy from one server to another when I run the system32 year Wbadmin.msc the MMC could not create the snap-in do I receive the error. Can you help me plase

Just noticed that Wbadmin.msc is not included anymore, and if you copy the snap-in from server 2012R2 and paste it into windows 10 windows folder, I have not gotten the mmc snapin to initialize, looks like its deprecated in windows 10.

The Scheduled backup policy folder in task scheduler is missing or broken. On startup the wbadmin.msc snapin queries the scheduled tasks resulting in an error when they are missing or otherwise broken.

4. Updated June 28, 2023 You may be able to use wbadmin restore catalog at this point to reset the catalog. See the documentation here, but note that as of this writing, the first example is missing a colon after the drive letter. The command, if your backups are on drive D:, would be wbadmin restore catalog -backupTarget:D:.

I've done quite a bit of research and it should be possible to do something similar in 2008 but then manually, The howto is described in the following link: -version-and-space-management-in-windows-server-backup.aspx . Basically it describes that you should use DiskShadow.exe to remove e.g. the oldest snapshot with a command like :

We ordered our latest DELL PowerEdge server without OS and after installing Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 discovered this hidden 2GB OS partition. After assigning a drive letter Z: to it I discovered that it's empty (I don't see any file or folder in it) but the hard disk drive / properties reports 14.4MB of used space and 1.98GB of free space. Even showing hidden files and folder I cannot understand what those 14.4MB refer to.

I have installed the Windows Server Backup feature several times in Windows Server 2012, but the "Windows Server Backup UI" is missing under the "Administrative Tools" and under the \System32\wbadmin.msc .

So, could this problem be related to some windows backup specifics? And if so, could i get an advice how to get better speeds for consequent VSS backups of Windows virtual servers to NFS/iSCSI datastores?

I use "windows server backup" to backup my Windows Server 2008R2 and Windows Server 2012 R2 boxes.
Using the GUI interface to "windows sever backup" I can:
o find the various instances of disk backups
o drill down into the directory structure of a given instance of a disk backup
o select a single file to be recovered

I want to look at all instances of a file that are available to be recovered. This feature is offered in "windows explorer" via the "previous versions" tab. How do I get that same "previous versions" capability via the "windows server backup" recover gui?

I am looking for a manual (perhaps) the describes how windows server backup, recover, VSS, and previous versions work and how they interrelate. I want to start with a macro view and then work my way into the minutiae.

Are there any utilities that allow me to peruse the windows server backupfile catalog? I want to find all instances of a particular file that are available to be recovered. Along with the filename and path, I want to see the file size and creation and/or modification for each instance of the file.

I took back of my windows 2012 physical server and the file it created is in VHDX format. I have the backup file copied to another location. Now i completely wiped off the array on this server, re-created the arrays in the same form like before. Now how do i get my bare metal server restored to previous state using VHDX file? This is very confusing , there is no proper documentation on how to back and restore physical servers. Any help is appreciated.

Wbadmin also has a graphical user interface (GUI) option to make it easier to create and restore a computer backup. Workstation editions use a backup wizard located in the control panel. The server version is done through a Windows feature using the Windows Management Console, which simplifies restoration, regardless of if it's a single file or multiple folders.

We can use WSB via the graphic backup/restore wizard or the (wbadmin.msc) command-line tool (which is a part of WSB). Windows Server Backup supports VSS and incremental backup. This feature is available both on Windows Server 2012 (and newer) and on Hyper-V Server.

itopia's Cloud Automation Stack (CAS) feature lets you schedule server-level snapshots of all servers in your VDI environment. These snapshots are created directly in your Google Cloud project (using the VM snapshot functionality in GCE) are useful for recovering servers after a critical failure such as disk corruption or a failed Windows update. However, recovering individual files or folders from these snapshots is difficult and time-consuming.
