Ihave been a passionate enthusiast of the arts for as long as I can remember. I was born with a gift for art. Growing up, I loved to use my crayons to create beautiful drawings and paintings. My parents were supportive, I am grateful for the opportunities they gave me. I have never had formal training in anatomy for artists and have always wanted to learn how to do things right. I don't know how to rate my skills because my work is always well-received. I feel like I need to improve my skills before I can truly excel as an artist.

One day, I met a professional fine artist, who told me that to draw better portraits, I have to learn anatomy. Given my background, I feel that I would have benefitted from such an experience. I started learning on my own, and I lacked a clear structure. There are many great resources available online for free, but I wanted a course that is designed specifically for artists who need to learn anatomy fast. I've made the decision to dedicate all my energy to my art career, and I'm really excited about it. I was set to begin my adult life with a major in fine art, and I knew that this would be the perfect choice for me. However, that was not to be. I studied graphic design, but had to go to work at 18. Years later, I built my own studio, stocked up on art supplies and searched tirelessly for inspiration only to find intimidation at the blank page and fear of failure at fruitless attempts. From time to time I was able to succeed, but only due to my diligent ability to "bring things into line".

This was before I have found the Anatomy Master Class; things have changed since. Taking this online art course, was the turning point for me. In this class, I found exactly what I was looking for - a simple to follow, yet comprehensive anatomy course that is designed for artists, not medical students. In this course, I learn only what is important for figurative art, without wasting any time on anything less essential. Also, the great thing for me is that I do not have to learn any Latin names of bones and muscles here. In the video lessons, the course teachers use simple terms and common names that I already know. This makes things much easier. I am working hard to improve my portrait and figure drawing skills and I hope to eventually be able to teach others about the joys of drawing. If I had known about Anatomy Master Class earlier, I would have enrolled right away.

Thank you very much for creating this course for artists like me. I also grateful for your support and advice you give me every time I have a question or need a second opinion on my artwork. Your feedback and constructive critique are so helpful.

Dan Gheno is a longtime teacher at the National Academy School and the Art Students League of New York, and for years he has been a contributor to Drawing, writing in-depth articles on topics such as drawing from observation, human anatomy, drawing clothing and drapery, and drawing foreshortened figures.

Now, his writings have been gathered into one volume, which is a must-have for any artist who is serious about improving his or her figure-drawing abilities. A quick look at the table of contents provides a good indication of how many important topics are covered:

Those are some of the most important subjects facing you in your figure drawings, and Figure Drawing Master Class discusses each of them in detail, with visual examples by both the author and a host of other great artists, from Old Masters to contemporary figure drawers and painters.

Such disproportion is possible with photo-perspective. Having seen so many photo images, we get used to misjudging proportions in drawing. So, drawing what you know instead of what you see is the way to make realistic, well-proportioned life drawings.

After very fast sketches, a tutor will probably set the timer for ten- to twenty-minute poses. This also will be lost time for you. Although fifteen minutes is long enough to make a meaningful drawing, it is still a very shallow exercise to get what it takes to draw proportionate and well-rendered life drawings.

In classical curriculum, students do not start learning those principles on live models; instead, they spend years on drawing still-lives, draperies, muscle corch, skeletons and skulls, classical sculptures, and busts before moving to drawing live people.

12. Get motivation from competing with yourself, not with other students. Your fellow students might have a totally different levels of drawing skills and move at a different speed. Mind your own education.

Do you struggle with figure drawing? Do you want to draw the human figure in any pose or position with accuracy, realism, consistency and confidence? If you answered yes, then you're probably just like me...

I have heard that Edgar Payne's "Composition of Outdoor Painting" is good but I have not found a copy to look through yet. Also, although not 50 years old yet, "The Artist's Guide to Sketching" has a special place on my bookshelf.

I have found Loomis' instruction on perspective in Successful Drawing to be the most helpful, complete treatment of linear perspective that I have read. All of Loomis' books are great, but his way with breaking down the various problems of perspective really stand out for me. What he did with perspective for me, Famous Artists Course (1960 version is the one I've got) did with understanding how to draw clothing and draperies, in breaking down and simplifying the reason behind how and why certain folds occur as they do.

Loomis books are my favorites too. "Successful drawing" has a really enlightening treatment of perspective. Another one I love is "Creative Illustration" - the simple and effective way to explain composition and value in that book makes it quite unique.

The main thing I dislike about older art books, especially the ones on drawing humans, is a lack of diversity. All the "example humans" tend to be white and European. Not that more modern books are that much better.
