All,

These are the links I found . . .

The activity differentiates based on student readiness and interest and is a tiered and ongoing assignment that will last throughout the reading of the novel. I would implement this strategy in my classes when students are reading an “outside of class” book. Students would keep a vocabulary log and be required entries at assigned and predetermined intervals.

I would assign each student a certain number of modules for a selected period of time, which also follows the principles of differentiated instruction by making students responsible learners. Students could complete modules at home, at school, or from any location on a smart phone, tablet, laptop, etc.

I utilize the surveys to gauge individual students interest, understanding, and engagement. I often utilize surveys after a Socratic Seminar for student self-assessment. The survey allows assessment to be a teaching that influences and individualized instruction instead of just another grade in the book.

Comments are appreciated.

Thanks,

Trent

Trent,  I like the tiered assignment.  It helps give me an idea of how to incorporate one into my classes.  Have you used tiered assignments in your classes before?

I'm not a big fan of SurveyMonkey any more because the free subscription doesn't have enough flexibility. I need more from my survey site.

I like survey monkey but if you don't want to pay for it and you want options to collect essay style answers try using the google surveys or try using junoed.com and creating a "test" which is really a survey this way you could look at individual results as well as overall results

I have used tiered assignments. I think the thing is to plan a little extra time and make certain that you have something for the students to do when they are done. I found the advanced students didn't mind helping the stragglers but they really were more interested in moving on when they finished everything else. I also have tried the lessons where if they can complete a preassessment question they move to step 3 but if not they go to step 2.... on these you really have to watch what is going on in the classroom. I had students trying to get help from other students so they didn't have to do the remedial work. This basically defeats the entire purpose of the activity. I think that type of thing may be better dealt with online where students can control their time on the activity without worrying about whether they finish with the others or not.
