Can we take base backup from Standby instead of Primary

Hello WAL-E community,

As WAL-E take base backups, I have a query.

According to this documentation,
https://www.postgresql.org/docs/9.6/continuous-archiving.html#BACKUP-LOWLEVEL-BASE-BACKUP

we cannot use STANDBY for taking base backup using "EXCLUSIVE" LOW LEVEL BACKUP API.

I came to know that WAL-E / WAL-G use LOW LEVEL BACKUP API to take base backup.

So, can we use WAL-E / WAL-G to take base backups from STANDBY ?
