Wakulla County Historical Society
April/May Newsletter 2009

***********************************************************
2009 is off to a great start! The society has a ton of things going
on. We are continuing our efforts with the museum and the heritage
village. We are pursuing a grant for the Heritage Village that will
help us further our progress with that project. We are also getting
close to opening the first floor of the museum and archives. We have
also stepped up our fundraising efforts. We were recently in the
Rotary Valentine’s Day Parade, and our float won a trophy for “Most
Original Float”! We are planning on participating in the St. Patrick’s
Day Parade as well (March 14th). We will also have a booth there and
at the Sopchoppy Worm Grunting Festival (April 11th). Again, if you
are interested in helping us either decorate the float or man the
booth at the festivals, please contact Barbara Hines
(barbara...@yahoo.com).

Recently there have been a few changes to the board. Mary Sampson has
taken over as the new chair of the Genealogy group. She is very
enthusiastic and has huge plans for the group. Please check their
newsletters on the website for updates pertaining to that group. It is
a great way to learn more about your family history. Terri Gerrell has
taken on the responsibility of our treasurer. She has been busy
reorganizing our financial records and has big plans for us as well.
We hope to keep her busy with all of the fundraising money we are
bringing in!

John Y. Roberts will be giving a presentation on the St. Marks
Lighthouse at our March 10th meeting at the Wakulla County Public
Library at 7pm. His great grandfather, Charles Fine and his wife
Sarah Fine, assumed the position of lighthouse keeper in St. Marks in
1892. Sarah Fine assumed the position of keeper in 1904 due to
Charles’ poor health. A female keeper was a relatively rare thing, and
we were lucky to have one right here in Wakulla! I won’t give away too
much more information, but it is sure to be another wonderful program,
so mark your calendars now! We hope to see you there, and remember,
you don’t have to be a member to attend our meetings-so bring a
friend!
