to wakulla historical society
Good News:
With a generous award from the Florida Humanities Council a traveling
exhibit called "William Augustus Bowles: Life of a Scoundrel" will
open Sunday, Nov. 22 at the San Marcos de Apalache State Historic
Park, St. Marks, Florida. This is the first such exhibit created by
the Wakulla County Historical Society. The Florida Park Service is
hosting a grand opening reception at the fort from 2 to 5 p.m. that
day.
St. Marks is a small historic village at the end of S.R. 363 directly
south of Tallahassee and a few restaurants offer excellent seafood.
The fort lies at the confluence of the St. Marks and Wakulla rivers.
Visitors will also be able to see the other exhibits at the fort and
the video about the Last Outpost of Empire. A beautiful walk to the
rivers takes you past some of the ancient Spanish ruins.
The Wakulla County Historical Society is proud to present a historic
period often overlooked and Bowles is a good example of what happens
in borderlands in the aftermath of a war, in this case the American
Revolution.
Please mark your calendars to attend and tell all your friends and
acquaintances that the fort has an exciting new addition. The exhibit
will be there until May 2010 and then will travel to the Wakulla
County Library for another six months.
Additional events will be planned to coincide with this exhibit in
January and February. -- Madeleine Carr
