Encounter data includes U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) Title 8 Apprehensions, Office of Field Operations (OFO) Title 8 Inadmissibles, and Title 42 Expulsions* for fiscal years (FY) 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. Data is available for the Northern Land Border, Southwest Land Border, and Nationwide (i.e., air, land, and sea modes of transportation) encounters.
Data is extracted from live CBP systems and data sources. Statistical information is subject to change due to corrections, systems changes, change in data definition, additional information, or encounters pending final review. Final statistics are available at the conclusion of each fiscal year.
Note: Nationwide encounters are the sum of CBP encounters across all areas of responsibility including Northern Land Border, Southwest Land Border, OFO non-land border ports of entry (e.g., airports, seaports), and USBP sectors that do not share a land border with Canada or Mexico (e.g., Miami Sector). This data is available for further review and download on the Nationwide Encounters Public Data Portal page.

If a bear charges you after a surprise encounter, stay still and stand your ground. Most of the time, the bear is likely to break off the charge or veer away. If you run, you're likely to trigger a chase response from the bear. If you have bear spray, this is the time to use it. Start spraying the charging bear when it is about 60 feet away or less.
During a surprise encounter where the bear is reacting defensively, you should not fight back. Fighting back will only prolong the attack and will likely result in more serious injuries. Since 1970, people who played dead when attacked by a bear during a surprise encounter in Yellowstone received only minor injuries 75% of the time. However, those that fought back during surprise encounters received very severe injuries 80% of the time.
When lightning occurs within 10 miles of Jungle Island, animal encounters and tree walk village will be temporarily closed to the public. Jungle Island officials will wait to reopen these experiences until 15-30 minutes after the last lightning strike. All guests are then encouraged to stay under cover and out of the storm. This is a great time to get a bite to eat or browse our gift shop!
