No frills are required when it comes to Pure Pool. The controls are introduced in the tutorial and are easy to pick up, even intuitive. To strike the cue ball, simply pull back on the right control stick and push forward again, taking into account how much power you want to apply. You can add side and spin with the B button to control your shots and to set up your next potting opportunity. For a wider view of the table, press Y and pan around to see how the balls lie. Planning in advance is important if you want to clear up and the guide markers are really useful here. You can hit and hope and gain some joy through luck, but ultimately this game rewards practice and skill.

Touchscreen controls are available as well. Slide your finger down for power and up again to strike the cue ball. It all feels nice and tight but playing with a controller still feels like the optimum way to play the game.

The graphics in Pure Pool are stunning. Every ball has more shine than my head after a session with Mr Sheen (other polish brands are available). The shadows, light and look of the balls is just like the real thing. The balls run smoothly and react just as they would were you in your local pool club. Cinematic sequences are a thing of beauty as your cue strikes the ball and a puff of chalk fills the air.

The online multiplayer is another positive for this game and again plays it nice and simple. All games modes are available to play online and if your fellow players are offline, there is a neat DNA feature that monitors your and their style of play so you can compete with them even when they are not physically online. In my time with the game this has led to some very competitive battles, having beaten people offline who then come online to redeem themselves. I also did the same. Logging on to see someone had beaten my DNA player made me challenge that person so I could gain my revenge. Local multiplayer makes use of the joy cons but I have to say that if you want to play this game and experience its realistic feel, a Pro Controller is best.

In Pure Pool, you can unlock different cues as you progress levels. My question is that are there any differences between them (besides cosmetic)? Does my accuracy or any other stat increase by using a higher level cue?

Just cosmetic. Pure pool doesn't have any accuracy or power stats or anything like that. It's all handled by how you handle the analogue stick. If you are after more power then put some front spin on the ball, careful though, it might make the cue ball climb the cushions.

A short tutorial teaches you the ropes. The right stick controls the cue, pulling back as far as you want to, then flicking forward to stroke the white ball. The left stick deals with the direction of the shot and the pitch, with circle applying spin and x allowing for a finer aim. It all feels very intuitive and can be picked up and played by anyone.

Bringing up the menu allows you to choose from several game modes. Offline there is a career for you to progress through, over several tournaments and across two game types. US 8-Ball is your standard pool game, with players either spots or stripes depending on what is potted first, while 9-Ball is a race to pot the number nine ball, but with the twist that you must first at least hit the next ball in order.

There are three difficulty levels for the two game types, with five tournaments at each level, which themselves contain on average ten matches to win. Mostly they are basic matches, but there are also speed pot and perfect potter challenges to break up the flow. While nice diversions, they also allow you to progress to the next tournament a little easier. Each is unlocked when you gain a certain number of stars, won by performing certain tasks during a match: pot from the other end of the table, or win without committing a foul for example.

Hi all, I'm Dan 'Nailz' Naylor, News Editor for the site (and I've just realised there's a pleasing alliteration to that). Almost all the news posts you see on the site are either by me or written because I say so, and we try to make them a little more interesting than a regurgitated press release so I hope you think we're succeeding.

Normally I'll be sinking my time into the latest RPG, but I'll play almost anything, with racing games a particular favourite. Owner of a Wii U, I have no regrets purchasing the console, though Smash Bros. hasn't left the disc tray since Christmas.

Pure Pool is a pool video game by British developer VooFoo Studios in association with Ripstone Games for the PlayStation 4 and PC platforms. It was released on the PlayStation Store in North America on 29 July 2014[1] and Europe on 30 July 2014, with a physical edition of the PS4 version also being published by System 3 under their Play It label. The Microsoft Windows version was released worldwide via Steam on 30 July 2014.[2] An Xbox One version was later released via the ID@Xbox self-publishing initiative on 14 November 2014.[3] The game was released for the Nintendo Switch on November 17, 2020.[4]

The game features standard cue sports game types in addition to a game-specific mode called Accumulator. In career mode the game offers 40 hours of gameplay.[1] The Official Sound Track (OST) of the game was composed by Etch Music, produced, recorded and mixed by Trevor Gibson at Circle (Recording) Studios in England, mastered by Zac at Zikis Mastering, was released by Supersaurus Records[5] and is published by Integrity Publishing.[6]

Pure Pool was developed by VooFoo Studios in association with Ripstone Games.[7] The teams collaborated on Pure Chess. The game builds on the team's previous title Hustle Kings, most noteworthy being the ball physics and the graphics.[1]

When it comes to billiards, however, videogames always seem to bend toward abstraction, pitting one formless competitor against the other in what amounts to abstracted turn-based strategy. Every cut is carefully measured from an omniscient camera often hovering perfectly over the center of the pool table, every shot is registered with deliberate precision.

The shots share the same spartan quality, with the right analog stick (or the Switch handheld touchscreen) serving as an unforgivingly tactile control over the power of a cue strike and a simple trio of overlays on the table to highlight the trajectories of each shot.

Ultimately, Pure Pool is exactly what its name suggests, for better and for worse. Players that buy into its fascinating shot presentation may find it enough to overlook the otherwise-flat experience. For everybody else, it will likely be an all-too-quick scratch off the eight ball.

Parents: According to the ESRB, this game is rated E with no descriptors. Players participate in a turn-based simulation of various billiards games. There is ambient background noise and music that suggests the pool games are played in a club or other social gathering, but no other people or activities outside of the pool game itself are shown.

Deaf & Hard of Hearing Gamers: There are no required sound cues for gameplay, nor is there any voice acting that could potentially require subtitling. There are no options to recolor text. (See examples below.)

Keep bottle upright and in a cool place.

Pure Pool features a handful of different game modes, some of which can be played both single-player and multiplayer. US 8-Ball and 9-Ball are the most widely known game types with 8-Ball being more prevalent here in America. In 8-Ball, you and your opponent are tied to either solid or striped balls depending on who pockets a ball first. The black number eight ball must be the last one to be pocketed; otherwise your opponent gets the win. Failing to pocket a ball results in the end of your turn, while not hitting one of your balls or pocketing your opponents allows a free drop of the cue ball for you competitor. More popular in Europe, 9-Ball requires the balls to be pocketed in numerical order.

The latest game update to Pure Pool added a new game mode called BlackBall (UK 8-Ball). I had to read up on the basic rules, as I never heard of it before. Instead of solids or stripes, balls are either yellow or red, but the game is played quite similar to US 8-Ball. There are also a handful of single-player only challenge modes for you to get the best time/score possible on the online leaderboards. Royal Rumble (the best game mode name) adds a new ball every 30 seconds, as you attempt to clear the table as quick as possible, while Perfect Potter keeps track of how many balls are pocketed in a row.

Taking a page from Forza Motorsport 5, VooFoo Studios has crafted unique player DNA profiles. Pure Pool closely monitors how long you take before attempting shots, if you go for safe or risky shots, and everything else in between. The concept behind this allows for you to play AI interpretations of not only your friends, but also the development team and celebrities at any time, instead of looking for an online opponent. Each player DNA I have played against has been quite different; you can even play against your own DNA. I was skeptical at first, but after winning against my own DNA, who generally attempting shots exactly as I would, I have become a believer. I am curious to see if I constantly hit the cue ball off the table, if it will mimic those actions.
