BATTLE CREEK, Mich., May 8, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- What started as a simple video conference call between Philadelphia middle school athletes and their coach turned into a true game changer today, thanks to a surprise appearance by Tony the Tiger, Shaquille O'Neal and Candace Parker. As part of the ongoing Mission Tiger campaign to help save and improve middle school sports nationwide, this legendary trio joined the video call to deliver a donation to the athletes at Philadelphia's Young Scholars Charter School to help them get back in the game when sports resume.
Life without sports seems strange now, but it's a familiar feeling at Young Scholars Charter School. Three years ago, the school had no sports at all. Coaches and administrators quickly saw the benefits when they introduced sports programming for students, but with limited resources and budget uncertainties ahead, the program faces challenges. That's why Mission Tiger stepped up to help provide critical resources to ensure the Young Scholars Charter School students can play once again when sports return.
Shaq, Candace and Tony delivered the news during a video conference between players and coaches, which prompted cheers and more than a few tears. Not only did the kids get a chance to snag some valuable tips from basketball legends for summer training at home, they learned the Mission Tiger donation will allow their school to build a brand-new sports court. The Young Scholars teams have no on-site facilities, and this new dedicated area will be a safe space for students to play and train. Mission Tiger will also provide all teams with new uniforms and equipment, plus cover the cost of facility fees to avoid canceled games or even entire seasons of league play.
"As parents and true believers in the power of sports for kids, this has been a tough time," said Brant Wheaton, marketing director of Kellogg U.S. ready-to-eat cereal segment. "Sports are vital to teaching leadership, teamwork and confidence in kids. That's why Mission Tiger is here to ensure that when sports return, students like those at Young Scholars Charter School will have the resources needed to keep playing like tigers."
SPORTS PROGRAMS AT RISKIn trying times, youth sport participation can suffer. Youth sports participation dropped to 45% in 2008 and declined to 38% by 2014, according to The Aspen Institute. Mission Tiger was created to help bridge funding gaps for programs in need, and the Young Scholars Charter School is a school with a true need, and a true heart for sports.
Coach and Athletic Director Devon Buchanan launched basketball, track and field, 7-on-7 football, volleyball, cheerleading and soccer at Young Scholars three years ago. The results were immediate: Sports helped Young Scholars students develop teamwork skills, confidence and perseverance, and students who were shy and withdrawn grew into leaders.
"Thanks to Mission Tiger, we'll be able to provide more opportunities for our students to play sports when games come back," said Buchanan. "This donation will have a long-standing impact on the lives of our deserving students. We're thrilled to have something the kids can look forward to while continuing the programs we've started to build."
A HALL OF FAME TEAMLegendary basketball Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal and professional basketball star Candace Parker are the latest to join Mission Tiger alongside other superstar athletes. As parents to young athletes, both Shaq and Candace know firsthand the benefits of youth sports.
"Sports are more than just something to entertain us; they open doors and teach kids invaluable lessons about teamwork and leadership," said O'Neal. "Sports keep kids motivated, busy and safe after school. That's why I'm proud to team up with Mission Tiger to help provide these kids access to a safe place to play when games are back."

Global Tiger Day, often called International Tiger Day, is an annual celebration to raise awareness for tiger conservation, held annually on 29 July.It was created in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit. The goal of the day is to promote a global system for protecting the natural habitats of tigers and to raise public awareness and support for tiger conservation issues.
Recently, Actress Elli Avram, who shares her birthday with the occasion of International Tiger Day on 29 July, lent her support to the cause of saving tigers from cruelty, the prime theme of upcoming film 'Mission Tiger'.[2]
From my reading I've surmised that the standard Allied tactic in dealing with Tiger tanks was: Don't. The Allies appear to have learned the hard way to use the greater mobility of their tanks to work their way around Tigers. But the scale of this game doesn't work that way so I'm wondering what folks here do to commit Tiger tankicide. It seems like they can be plonked on some hill and just blaze away at all they survey. Thanks for any help!
If they're bold enough to sit on a hill, you might be able to detrack them with an intense mortar (pref 81mm+) mission (mortars so the strike comes in before they move), and then kill them with a heavier calibre strike. You'll at least get them to displace off the exposed hill.
It's funny you ask it as just last night I played a well designed battle for FI titled 'Catch a Tiger' iirc where you have exactly that nightmare situation: a reinforced inf platoon with three bazookas coming into a gully where at the bottom they spot an immobilized monster across a small bridge. Unluckily the monster is stll alive and kicking, and some enemy troops are moving around it.
I was able and lucky enough to catch it by its tail, making a penetrating shot on the turrett's rear by the best bazooka's team I had who was able to move undetected to a vantage and close position, while the rest on the troops were attacking from a different direction and the mortar playing havoc around the immobilized tank to all the squads who were nearby and in the hope of finding the lucky hit.
I did not need the at gun coming up as reinforcement as the enemy collapsed very quickly after I also knocked out another armored car. A good scenario where you have to apply several basic notions, and be very careful in moving the troops.
I revisited The Scottish Corridor after bug fixing was done on Tigers - previously in 3rd scenario where you have to defend against incoming German troops, only few of my shots disabled their main gun and they were done for. Now I've been pounding the first tiger from all sides with one British 6 punder AT gun and two piat teams from the side and rear. Although I managed to score two full penetrations and 4 partial penetrations plus lots of other metal denting that fuc**r is still moving around and shooting my good boys. AND there is still one more such beast to be taken care of. I'll be wiped out before my firefly arrives...
That assumes they can get a shot off before being knocked out. Playing the In the Shadow of the Hill scenarios in series and the last one and the one before have left me with smoking wrecks of Churchills all over the battlefield.
I tried that scenario three or four different ways and still could not get close enough before I was spotted and blasted into bloody pieces. You must have figured out something I missed. If I wasn't daunted by the editor I would modify the map to either make the woods along the creek bed denser or extend the map along the far side of the ridge so that it can be used as a covered approach.
Thx for the responses! I've played the CMBN games a fair amount but not near as much as I'd like and so haven't messed with the Tigers very much. I remember I played the German side in one of the CMBB scenarios and there was a forested road that led up to a bridge. I put a Tiger on the road in the woods so it was impossible to get a shot at it x for directly to the front. But the Tiger would take out anything that tried to get in position to fire on it. It was one of those situations where I guess the enemy just would've had to have found another route - the stream couldn't be forded in the scenario. It makes me think of something I'd LOVE to see in CMBN: bridging. I don't know if the capability to build a bridge within the time parameters of CMBN existed in those days tho.
