Happy new year all!

Over the last few months we've been looking at ways to improve our handling of support queries, and based on informal feedback on Twitter <https://twitter.com/WagtailCMS/status/801384753589080064>, we've made the decision to focus our resources on Stack Overflow.

Many of the Wagtail core team are now following the 'wagtail' tag on Stack Overflow, and we'd like to encourage everyone to use Stack Overflow as the first point of contact for support queries from now on, instead of this Google group.

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/wagtail

When asking questions, be sure to read Stack Overflow's advice on "How do I ask a good question?" <http://stackoverflow.com/help/how-to-ask> and remember to tag your question with "wagtail".

As ever, we hugely value the contributions of the wider Wagtail community in responding to questions, and I'd like to invite seasoned (and not-so-seasoned :-) ) Wagtail users to follow the tag on Stack Overflow and provide answers where you can - it really will be appreciated.

We recognise that not all discussions are a good fit for Stack Overflow's question-and-answer format, and for that reason we'll still be keeping this Google group open. However, questions posted here may not receive a response as quickly, and we'd strongly recommend asking on Stack Overflow wherever possible.

By standardising on a single platform for support queries, we hope to improve our support coverage, as well as being able to divide our time between Wagtail development and support more effectively.

See you on SO!

Cheers,
- Matt

Fantastic! I've had the Wagtail tag in my RSS feed for some time now, along with a number of other django related tags. If you're old like me and continue to use an RSS reader (I use Feedly), it is an easy way to check in on topics. I find it extremely helpful for topics where I can help, as well as things I'd like to learn more about.

I have posted a question on StackOverflow but there are no responses at yet. I realise that it may be 'obvious' but I would still like an answer if possible, or at least an acknowledgement that someone from the support staff had actually seen it. Otherwise I do not see this new policy working.

Thanks ...

Richard

Hi Richard,

As an open-source project, Wagtail doesn't have any dedicated support staff - support queries are answered by members of the Wagtail community and development team outside of our regular work. As such, we aren't able to guarantee that questions will receive a response.

Cheers,
- Matt

Hi Matthew et al,

We have had a great experience using Stack Overflow over the past couple months to get advanced technical support with Wagtail. Thank you for your patience and dedication there, really, everyone who has helped answer a question should stop by and let me treat you to a drink at the coffee bar.

However, I would not really recommend SO to regular CMS users - even advanced users might be put off by the level of complexity being discussed. Maybe a "wagtail-user" tag or so would help filter things down a bit. But perhaps neither was this Google Group the place for that.. I would like to hear some thoughts from this group about what public "community support" channels might entail, and I'm in particular also interested in a place to ask questions in German and other languages as Wagtail grows in reach.

Perhaps something like this needs a dedicated forum

Or perhaps our goal should be to make the product so beautiful and intuitive, that the need for this is obsoleted one Pull Request at a time.

Keep up the good work!

Cheers,
Oleg

Hi Oleg,
Thanks for the support, and sorry for the delayed reply!

You're right that Stack Overflow isn't a particularly welcoming place for CMS end-users - I suspect that non-programming questions would be deemed off-topic there and closed on sight anyhow. With that in mind, we're now working on setting up a Discourse <https://www.discourse.org/> instance to cater for Wagtail users.

More news to follow when we have it... however, one thing to mention now is that the core team will only have limited time to assist with end-user support, so it'll need to be substantially community-led in order for it to really take off.

Cheers,
- Matt

Tim, I believe the question was whether a dedicated Discourse forum exists for Wagtail. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the answer is no: support is still handled through StackOverflow, GitHub, and this list.
