to Wageningen Student Beekeepers
OK!
So this is pretty long, but has everything that we went through in the
meeting.
(feel free to turn any of the segments into discussion points)

First, we said hello.
What we do- students beekeeping. hard to learn from a book, so we get
the hives, and keep them as a group. as a student, hard to have your
own bees, because of costs, moving around, etc. so if you keep them
as a collective, you learn, hands on, and don't have the problems of
specific ownership.
If you don't have the time, no worries, because it's a group, so when
you're busy, someone else can take it up.
YES, you will learn beekeeping from being a part of the group.
How it's been done, CollegeBeekeeper website (check it out if you
haven't). Use it as a way to show how it's worked elsewhere, so
everyone can see how others make it work.

But each location is a NEW place. and WAGENINGEN will be their own
NEW place, so it's up to YOU as students to figure how you want to
make it work.

What we have so far:
- woodware. Enough to house ~3 hives.
- a location to keep the bees. located behind radix, after the field,
next to the farmhouse. bees are already there, as part of the Bijen
lab.
- permission to keep bees there. As long as we keep the area clean,
and don't go over 10 hives (that'd be more for the future growth).
- BRAM! He's in the lab, and knows beekeeping. And he's attractive.
- Bee Lab. They're doing bee work, so we've got people around doing
stuff with bees.
- Local beekeepers association. Can be a source for local help.

What we need:
- protective equipment
- a well organized group
- training (theoretical, and practical)
- a PLAN!

Many issues:
- membership?
- leadership?
- finances? two treasurers?
- how to associate with the University? can they support us?

AND NOW... our Discussions. (some of which I'll make into separate
discussion groups, and other stuff you should decide to make into
things to discuss).

Hooking onto a student association. Why? Legitimacy. Perhaps a
source to secure funding. Problem, that sometimes that means only
students from their association can join. That sucks, cause we want
ANY student to be involved.
Sibilla is part of STEL, and will contact them about what exactly we
need from them.

When to meet? For Dutch students, week days are better. For
Internationals, weekends are better. Perhaps we can do BOTH.

Entomology department. Do they know about us? Can someone contact
them? How could they help- perhaps provide equipment. Direct
funding, unlikely, but protective equipment, if they have it, would be
great. JEROEN (sp?) is in the Entomology Department, so will see
about this.

Beekeepers association in wageningen. Will they sponsor us? For
equipment? Perhaps to lower costs? WHO will contact them?

Protective equipment, we need for ~5 (can't really have more than that
around a hive at once). Just the veil, and gloves. But less gloves,
because you should probably do beekeeping without. for the start,
perhaps we can borrow from the lab, but not a long term solution.

We also need a SMOKER, and a BEE tool. What are the total costs for
this?

MEMBERS. Can we charge a small fee to each person? People say yes.
But not sure HOW MUCH. Could see how much funding we need, how many
people we have, and then decide.

Treasurer. Would be good to have two people on this. One for money
coming IN (sponsorship and honey/was sales) and another for money
going OUT (equipment, gear, stuff the club needs).

LEADERSHIP? WHO wants to be in charge? You know you want to!
possible roles
- president
- 2 treasurers (could be part of another job)
- hive manager
- activity manager
- secretary

(possible that one person takes two roles)

OPEN HIVES!
WE START OPENING THE HIVES IN THE FIRST WEEK OF GOOD WEATHER IN
APRIL.

Before then...
Let's get some Theoretical Training! Background. Orient people.
Websites, books, etc. List of stuff that people should look at.
ALSO, let's have some classes together. ~3 of them? In MARCH.
when/where to have the classes? decide together. WHO to give the
classes?
Advertise the classes to EVERYONE, so we can expand our group, get new
people interested.

Name for the group- Suggestions?
