I was amazed, at first, reading Kick-Ass. This is actually probably one of my favorite Super Hero movies because, like The Incredibles or Watchmen, it explores some of the more realistic side of being a Super Hero. But it does so with a great combination of humor, violence, and teenage drama. We got characters we like and care about, we wanted Big Daddy to make it too, and we walk out thinking Hit Girl is awesome.
I have recently really enjoyed Alice in the Resident Evil movies. Maybe it has something to do with the actress Milla Jovovich. (I actually love all the kick ass roles she plays!) I love the theme of girl vs. the evil corporation and the quest for an Eden-like place in a world of zombies and very few humans.
Given the safe, PG-13-rated tenor of most superhero movies today, something offbeat (and R-rated) like Kick-Ass comes as a shock, albeit a welcome one. Not only does the film offer up bloody violence, foul language, and an outlandish sense of humor in abundance, but it also mixes enough genres together to make their successful interplay something to admire. Themes of love, family, and revenge set the stage for a profusion of superhero action, all very ridiculous but also aware of its own absurdity. Based on the comic book by Mark Millar (creator of Wanted), and directed by Matthew Vaughn, this extreme frenzy-of-a-movie pulls no punches and leaves the viewer craving more.
Halloween is a celebration of all kinds of things, but what most of us focus on other than stuffing our faces with candy is remembering all the creeps, ghouls, goblins, and nasties that are associated with this holiday. While people like the Nostalgia Critic are out there naming their favorite Halloween classics, I actually want to use our beloved holiday to discuss a different type of evil. For this year, I want to focus on the most hateable movie villains in the last 20 years.
As far as Hit-Girl goes, that movie could either focus on an older Mindy Macready, who was played by Chloe Moretz in the original Kick-Ass films, or it could focus on the character's younger years growing up under the tutelage of Big Daddy. In the new comics, Hit-Girl travels the world righting wrongs and brutally kicking ass.
The other big piece of my background that influenced CAGED is my academic background. One of my areas of expertise is in cross-cultural neurophenomenology which looks at how our universally shared neurology shapes our experiences and how those experiences act as the basis for cultural systems. Some of my research focused on ancient ritual and religion around the world, and that definitely made its way into CAGED.
