Just some of the incredible WAFLT Conference line-ups this year:

Special Pre-Conference Workshop Thursday

Pathway to Proficiency: Using Proficiency Benchmarks and Performance Indicators to Guide Instruction

Presenter: Laura Terrill

National ACTFL consultant

Thursday, November 1, 2018, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m

Consider how the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can Do Statements are used to focus performance expectations for unit and lesson learning targets from Novice to Advanced. Use proficiency benchmarks to identify what students can do and select appropriate strategies for moving students to the next range of performance. Work with strategies for maintaining target language use and making input comprehensible in the interpretive mode. Explore strategies that improve presentational skills as students engage in inquiry, elaboration, summarizing, revision and editing. Create effective pair and small group activities that lead to purposeful interactions among learners in the interpersonal mode. Use actionable feedback to improve student performance to strengthen communication skills.

Keynote: We Are All Advocates

Presenter: Ted Zarrow

2016 ACTFL National Language Teacher of the Year, Latin teacher at Westwood High School in Westwood, MA

Friday afternoon in conjunction with WAFLT Awards

A world language education is civil right, and to deny a child access to world languages is to deny them access to a world class education! We are the key to this happening – the classroom teacher is the linchpin to successful language advocacy in this country – real language advocacy begins with what we teach and show our students every day. If we are to see languages on the rise, and if we are to lead with languages, we must all be advocates.

Tomorrow’s Teachers is September 25.

??WAFLT Scholarship for Tomorrow’s Teachers

The Executive Board of the Wisconsin Association for Language Teachers is pleased to offer up to 10 scholarships available to college-level students preparing to become language teachers.  The purpose of these scholarships is to provide teachers-in-training with financial assistance to attend the WAFLT Fall Conference. By attending the conference, teachers-in-training will have the opportunity to become familiar with WAFLT and the language specific professional organizations which also hold meetings during the conference, meet and interact with teachers already in the profession, become more familiar with trends in world language education and learn firsthand the benefits of membership in WAFLT.

Scholarship Requirements:

  • College/university juniors, seniors or graduate students must be declared majors or minors in a language teaching program.

  • Students must have completed or be currently enrolled in a language methods course.

  • Students must join WAFLT before applying for the scholarship.

  • Nominators (methods instructor or cooperating teacher) must be current members of WAFLT and must have been members for the two consecutive years preceding the nomination. They may only nominate up to 5 students each.

  • At least one scholarship will be available for each of the languages.
