The Magellan company is to close its lead mining operation at Wiluna
because of its inability to transport lead safely. This raises some
interesting issues about the capability of private firms to operate
within safety guidelines when profits are at stake (especially when
the decisions are being made overseas), and the rights of community's
to reject dangerous cargoes going through their towns. Lead is bad
enough, but if it had been uranium ore, well...
BTW the State Environment Minister, Bill Marmion, seems completely out
of his depth in the job, at least judging by his performance in this
matter.
