Oh the pennies dropped now has it lol... "it worked for a while" yeah,
when there was hardly any one living here!
Fremantle's future plans is the way to go, more effective and higher
density living, re-planning and re-thinking is needed asap!
Cheers for this Peter very interesting!

There is a school of thought in the UK that George Monbiot is a tad hypocritical, as the following comment on the Guardian piece illustrates:

George, we heard a couple of years ago that you bought a car because you chose to move from the city to a remote part of Wales.
This article isn't yet another green 'do as I say, not as I do' piece is it?
When we see middle class eco-types buying tiny energy efficient flats built on brownfield sites between derelict factories and railway sidings the rest of us might believe that the eco-apocalypse really does need to be averted by taking action.

I think that the comment in the Guardian "do as I say, not as I do"
is understandable, the "seeing is doing" approach and lead by example
is extremely important, coming from the UK myself and being fairly new
to Perth, I know myself personally, that it's a totally different way
of living, moving to remote locations such as Wales isn't generally
something many do, and people who think of him as being a tad
hypocritical, which he may be in some ways, I think that they can
really only say that regarding his comments on Perth, if they have
lived here in Perth and experienced it themselves.
All I know is that I have lived in several different places in the UK
and here in Perth, although it is beautiful, it certainly seems
unsustainable.
Thanks for your post Ian it is interesting to read the different views
that other people have as I am only just learning about all this at
Uni now :)

Talking about people's preference to live in single detached houses in
outer suburbs, there is a research about the housing preferences of
Australians made by the Grattan Institute called 'The Housing We'd
Choose':

http://www.grattan.edu.au/pub_page/090_report_cities.html

Residents from Melbourne and Sydney were asked to make housing choices
limited by their budgets. Less than half of the people said they'd
choose a single detached house. People seem willing to sacrifice house
size for a short commute.

By comparing the level of interest for semi-detached homes and
apartments with the real supply in those cities, the study found a
shortage of more than 400,000 semi-detached homes and apartments for
Sydney and more than 200,000 for Melbourne. It seems like part of the
problem is more about the lack of choice than of just a matter of
preference for single-detached housing.

It would be interesting if a similar research was made in Perth.
