Today's West (8/4/11) has no less than eight stories related to
sustainability in the main news section, including one about how water
is emerging as a core issue for the next state election. If we were to
include stories about real estate conditions and the resources
economy, almost all the main news would have relevance to the broad
issue of sustainable development. The ALP seems to have woken up to
the salience of these matters (especially in regard to public
transport and water), and the Barnett Government's apparent dominance
of WA politics suddenly seems a little weaker. The big question is
whether Labor can turn their criticism of the Barnett Government's
failures into a coherent policy alternative.
