Hi, Can anyone recommend a Martial Arts place around Fremantle area
that takes in older out of shape students. I'm looking for something
that will get me into shape and teach me a little martial arts for self
defense purposes. Not interested in going for black belts or
competitions.

G'day TYIA,

How about South Fremantle ?
Ninjukai Taijitsu and the dojo is at 1/20 Strang St. Fremantle, the street
behind the Coventry shop in Hampton rd. South Fremantle. The art is similar
to jujitsu only more deadly and after the green belt you also get to train
with ninja weapons. :-)
You can train at your own pace and its up to you if you want to train only
for fitness or train for a higher belt. There is no competition in ninjitsu,
the only person you compete against is yourself. Classes are held on Monday
evenings with practice and revision of lessons on Tuesday and Thursday
evenings and Saturday mornings. Its up to you if you choose to come down one
hour a week or up to 12 hours of practice/gym a week the price is all the
same, $40+GST per month for adults. There are separate classes for kids
above 4-5 years old and if you have any AND can pull them away from their
Playstation/Nintendo game console bring them along.
I have only started this year myself just to get fit and am begining to keep
up (more or less) with the younger and healthier students. Well, when I said
younger and healthier what I really meant was half my age, half my weight
and without a damaged back, neck, shoulder, hip, wrist and 30 years of chain
smoking. :-) The age and fitness is not important, as long as you stick to
it week after week you will see a steady improvement in your fitness.
Why not come down and have a look or try it out a few times and see if you
like it before you join in. I'm in every Monday after 5pm and Thursday after
6pm or ask for Michael or Dina and they will look after you.
The main headquarters are in East Perth which is also running Shintao
meditation classes in there, if you are interested in that. Have a look at
the website http://www.ninjukai.com.au/ for more info and if you still have
any questions drop me an email.

Cheers,
Harry

Anyone else above 4 years old ( boy, girl, man, women or others) interested
in self defense or fitness is also welcome to come down to either branch and
have a look around or give it a try. :-)

I am also looking for somewhere that offers those things, however in
the central Perth city or North Perth area. I'm not particularly out
of shape yet, but can see myself getting that way if I continue not to
exercise, so would like to get into some sort of martial art as a
preventative measure, and to learn some practical self defense.

Anyone know of something geared to older teens/20-somethings? I'm not
interested in going some place and watching 8 year olds doing better
than me :P

Lords Gym in Subiaco has martial arts classes and there 2 places in
Perth that I know of which are near the intersection of Hay St &
Milligan St.

Akido School of Perth
996 Hay St Perth
9386 5382

Brian Mackie's Karate Academy
43 Milligan St Perth
9321 6375

Brian Mackie is one of the oldest martial arts place in WA and has been
going for over 20 years.
There are a few more in the Perth city & north Perth , you can find them
by doing a search using telstra's on-line yellow pages.

Brian Mackies Karate Academy is just outside QV1, next to The Old Melbourne
Hotel in Milligan Street :) The car rental place is next to it.

Dunno if Karate is what you want to do though. You can always go see my
girlfriend upstairs from you, she's been doing a variety of martial arts for
about 8yrs and can give you advice on what sort of style to go for. Email
me if you want her name and what floor she works on :)

Not sure what time the white belt classes are in the city but the dojo is at
36 Wickham St. East Perth.
Give them a call on 9325 4713 to find out the time and try it a couple of
times or just drop in and have a look around.
