SCIATICA.
Sciatica is defined as low back pain shooting down the leg. It is caused
by pressure on the sciatic nerve which operates the legs. This occurs in
the spinal chord and is the most common form of back injury, it is also
known as ruptured disc or pinched nerve.
The pain can be mild to severe and can cause muscles to waste from lack
of use. Permanent nerve damage is rare.
The pain usually occurs on one side and results from inflammation and
usually disappears as the injury improves. There is usually no risk of
paralysis. If cuda equine syndrome occurs with progressive weakness in
legs and bladder or bowel incontinence immediate medical treatment
should be sought.
Illnesses causing sciatic nerve include isthmic spondylolisthesis,
lumbar spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, and herniated disc.
These all cause pressure and inflammation on the sciatic nerve.
