Interesting,  another option is to change the firmware in a UV-K5 turns it into a beacon, about $40 for the HH, just cannot use ver 3 

I have done this with good results and changet the long tone to beeps.

Yes, an economical option.

Keep in mind the "shield" that Dave KV and Mark EZ collaborated on to create a fox.   I've used it to beacon RTTY a while back.

And back in the day (cough cough) i bought a couple of DRA818 txcvr modules, one VHF and the other UHF.  They are FM only IIRC but thought it might be good to try.

Then i ran out of Round To Its.

Not sure about their spectral purity.   Definitely not the sort of thing I could use in JA.
