Jenn Lockwood led the session with assistance from Richard Mario.

The focus remained on Observation of Ski/Snow interaction and Body Part movements.

Together we listed the descriptions we can use to encourage a common language.

Here are the lists we created:

Ski/Snow Interaction

==================

Skis can: Slide, Skip Skid, Carve

Relationship between skis can be: I I; /\; \/; also lead change

Do skis change position simultaneous or sequenced?

Bend in the ski

Edge

Rotate

Types of Turn Shapes: C, Z, J, S

Verboten to discuss Snow Spray

Body Parts

=========

Feet & ankles

Flex and Extension of ankles, knees, hips spine

Rotation of upper body wrt to lower body

Femur/Hip rotation

Angulation and Inclination

Verboten to discuss Hands

Focused on Pivot Slips

===================

We then worked in pairs and created lists of efficient and inefficient ski/snow interaction and Body part movements.

Alas the list below is incomplete as I didn’t take that large sheet of paper, so this is what I and my partner identified

Skis

Efficient                               Inefficient

Slips                                       Skids

Skis Parallel                         Skis don’t stay parallel

Rotates                                                Rotates but not simultaneous

Edge to Flat to edge

Body Parts

Efficient                                                               Inefficient

Femur Rotate in Hip                                        Whole Body Rotation

Flex & Extend of joints                                  Lack of Flex and Extend of joints

More Angulation than Inclination             Inclining into the hill

We then watched Mt. Hood Meadows Clinic Video of instructors doing pivot slips and identified what we saw.  4 demos of pivot slips were viewed and we saw a range of success in making these types of turns.

Jenn had pointed out that we should have a good idea of what we want to see in a particular ski maneuver before we commence MA.  While we created a fairly extensive list of items to look for, it would be wise to look for 3 things.

Warmest Regards,

Anne
