Dear Coastal Imaging Community,

Members of the CIRN community have been working diligently since CIRN Week in May 2023 to plan and implement new activities for our community. We are pleased to share some updates.

First, We’d like to announce registration for CIRN Week 2024 scheduled for 21-24 October and hosted at the Water Research Laboratory, UNSW Sydney, Australia (https://events.humanitix.com/cirn-week-2024). Thank you to Kristen Splinter and Mitch Harley for offering to host. The week will include two days of boot camp covering topics tentatively including CoastSat satellite imagery toolbox, Planet imagery analysis, image processing from mobile platforms, or other topics. If you have a toolbox or method you would like to share with the CIRN community as part of a boot camp, please send a message to coastalimaging...@gmail.com to express your interest in teaching a class.

We also have recordings of the CIRN 2023 boot camp lectures coming to the CIRN YouTube channel soon. We expect the edited videos including closed captions to be ready to share in the coming weeks, and we’ll let you know when they are posted.

We have had the successful initiation of our Satellite Working Group, which held their first interactive presentation and discussion in March with a presentation by Sean Vitousek titled, “The future of coastal monitoring through satellite remote sensing,” and facilitation by Kat Konstantinou and Floris Calkoen. You can find a recording of the seminar here. Expect to see more seminars and discussions in the coming months!

Finally, we'd like to announce version 2.0 of Coastal Image Lib, a Python library that produces common coastal image products—such as merged and rectified images—intended for quantitative analysis of coastal environments. Version 2.0 includes simplified dependencies, bug fixes, and an updated example script.

We'd like to invite members of the CIRN community to be part of the CIRN Software Working Group. The software group will tackle various topics such as expanding the capabilities of Coastal Image Lib and other existing CIRN code, developing future coastal imaging software, planning for parity between Python and Matlab code, and addressing issues in the CIRN GitHub repos.  We'll communicate using Google Groups and email, and have meetings with Google Meet when necessary. If you're interested or have any questions, please email Eric Swanson (eswa...@contractor.usgs.gov), Dylan Anderson (dylan.l....@usace.army.mil), or Maile McCann (mail...@usc.edu).

Best regards,
Meg Palmsten
