Is any club member interested in a Hammarlund HQ-129-X? Please see below for the email that I received, plus a photo of the radio.

I am contacting you to see if anyone in your club or anyone else you know of would be interested in a used Hammarlund one way radio. It was my father's. I have photos I can send. The cord looks worse for wear, but hopefully the unit is still good.

Hi Ted -

Thank you for your interest, but I don't think this would be a good choice for a new ham or for someone who is working on getting their license. This is for several reasons:

  • The condition of this radio is unknown and would likely require significant experience to analyze and repair it to get it to operating condition
  • This is an HF radio, which required a General license, so even after getting your Technician license, you would still not be able to transmit on most of the frequencies
  • This is a vintage radio which may be more difficult to maintain and operate
Your first license will be the Technician license, which lets you operate on VHF and UHF. In my opinion, either a dual-band VHF/UHF handheld ("HT") or mobile radio would be a better choice for you at this point.
