Hi,
The Marconi Club is having a CW contest Sunday with a speed limit of 15 WPM. For folks lacking confidence in CW it’s probably a good place to get some experience. By definition it’s for novices, and for folks expecting to deal with novices. Listen for stations running at a speed you can handle. If you make a mistake no one will be yelling at you.
You don’t need a big CW vocabulary for something like this… learn to recognize small repetitive words like CQ, 5nn, 73, TU, etc., then you can focus on getting the call signs correct. Find someone calling CQ, listen to him call a few times if necessary until you have the callsign correct.
The exchange is simple, like “5nn MC 123”. No names or QTH. The 5nn is always 5nn, folks never (or very rarely) send any other RST in a contest. The “MC” is either MC or NR depending on club member or not. Learn to recognize those 2 terms, and you’re good, it’s one or the other. The “123” is a Serial Number starting at 001, then 002, etc. If you get the Serial number wrong, just log your best guess, no big deal. As long as you have the callsign correct, it still counts towards your CW WAS or DXCC!
1300 - 2300 UTC, which I think is 8am to 6pm local time.
It’s a good etiquette to submit an electronic log after a contest, but if you don’t know how, don’t let that stop you from participating. Make a few contacts, and have fun!
73,
Joe K1VW
