CVARC Minutes 5/6/2026
The May 2026 meeting was called to order by Chris Knox (KI1P) at 1850 EST at the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department.
The focus of this month’s meeting was an intraclub swapmeet that resulted in the redistribution of a significant amount of electronic material that gave pleasure to both the providers and the recipients. The success of the effort led to a suggestion that the club repeat the event every six months.
Chris (KI1P) reminded the club that meetings will alternate between the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department building and the Good Measure Pub. On even numbered months the club will meet at Good Measure and on odd months the club will meet at the Fire Station.
Alan (K1MZM) suggested that the club purchase ARRL Field Day T-shirts at the club's expense. Members are encouraged to wear them during our Field Day exercise this year on June 27-28. Please indicate your interest and size requirements to Alan (K1MZM) the club secretary at Alan...@gmail.com.
The current cost for the club’s post office box is $216.00 annually. We discussed the option of having the club’s mail delivered to one of the officer’s home addresses rather than continuing to pay for a post office box. Since the fee has been paid for this year, we will table the discussion for six months before making a final decision.
The Montpelier Corporate Cup is scheduled for Thursday May 14, 2026. This coincides with the Xenia Hamvention so several members will be unavailable. A show of hands at the meeting indicated that several of our members will be available to assist with the Corporate Cup and we decided to participate as usual. Members who wish to participate are asked to contact Patrick (KC1DPM) at tesl...@gmail.com so we can plan accordingly.
A clean up of our repeater site at Mt. Pleasant in Williamstown is planned for July. The favorable treatment we receive from the site owner is somewhat dependent on our willingness to maintain the site so club members are encouraged to help with the cleanup. We will need string trimmers, a push-mower, and an electric chain saw in order to clean up the site. It is also an opportunity to see what a repeater site looks like for members who have never seen one.
Chris (KI1P) reminded the club that our current repeater antenna on Mt. Pleasant is aging and in need of replacement sometime soon. The cost will likely be about $1500 for a suitable commercial grade antenna that will be able to withstand the ice loading on the tower.
Currently active repeaters that are accessible to club members include the following:
Burke Mountain: 146.82
Williamstown (Mt. Pleasant): 146.625
Lincoln Peak: 145.47
Mt. Ascutney: 146.76
Tunbridge: 146.97
Turkey Hill: 147.39
All the available repeaters use a PL tone of 100Hz and conventional offset frequencies.
There was a discussion of how the club members can communicate between monthly club meetings. We decided to re-activate the Sunday night CVARC net on 146.625 MHz at 8 PM local time. Ed (N1FMP) has been monitoring the net frequency and reports there has been little activity. Any members interested in acting as net control for the Sunday net should contact Alan (K1MZM) so we can set up a roster of net control stations. The purpose of the net is to encourage communication between members and net control stations will encourage members to tell about their recent activities and any needs to assistance or equipment that would aid them in their ham radio activities.
Additionally, members are urged to participate on the long standing CVARC 160 meter net on Monday evenings at 8 PM local time. The net is called by David (W1KR) on 1.967 KHz.
Now that we have the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department building available for meetings, the club has a suitable space for more formal presentations.
Jane (KD6PCE) volunteered to make a presentation about emergency communications in northern California when she lived there some years ago. Nancy and Jane also agreed to make a presentation about the efforts that the Calais community has made to use GMRS for emergency service in their town.
Chris (KI1P) agreed to demonstrate how repeater duplexers are adjusted.
Alan (K1MZM) agreed to give a presentation on the basic types of HF antennas that will be of special interest to Tech licensees interested in upgrading to General or Extra class.
The next club meeting will focus on our preparations for ARRL Field Day. In anticipation of that meeting Alan (K1MZM) will obtain the official packet of information from the ARRL.
Members agreed to post announcements of the Field Day on Front Porch Forum, The World, Facebook, The Bridge, Seven Days, and Vermont Public. These announcements should appear about one week before FIeld Day and electronic announcements can be repeated 1-2 days before the event as a reminder.
Upcoming Club events will include our participation in the Corporate Cup Race on May 14, 2026
