Hi Tim,

I am re-visiting Vuwer after a long hiatus, it is a very valuable tool and I'm glad you have kept it going all these years! I also really like the "new" dropbox setup option - very slick.

One instruction I am having trouble with though, is setting up a standard "guest" user account with NO password as it says in your instructions. OSX doesn't seem to provide any way to specify no password. If I leave the password field blank then it wont' let me continue. I set the password to "a" with a password hint "the password is 'a'". but the hint doesn't seem to show up when I use the switch user login window. I also cannot remove the password when I access the standard user settings from my admin account - again OSX won't let me save a "new" password unless I actually put one in there.  How did you manage to set up a standard user called "guest" or whatever, with no password?

Thanks

Aaron

I need to revise the documentation for VUWER, because OS X no longer allows blank passwords for user accounts as it once did.  Passwords are now required in El Capitan, including standard accounts.

However, the password hint does work for any situation that the thief will encounter.  Here’s the trick:  you need to add the password hint to your administrative account as well as your guest account.  As long as you set your administrative account so that it requires a login screen after sleep (i.e. the lid being closed), then the thief can either try to log into your admin account (in this case, include a hint that says, “Use the guest account, password is wxyz123”, or he can switch users and get the hint for the guest account (“Password is wxyz123”).

The only case where he would NOT get a hint is if he was logged into your admin account and tried to switch users by clicking on the guest account name in the upper right hand of the menu bar.  But that is clearly not a situation that would realistically happen - the thief if going to close the lid, stuff your laptop into a backpack, and take off.  The next time he opens the computer, he’ll see a login screen.
