Remington: The Science & Practice of Pharmacy is the most widely used textbook and reference work on pharmaceutical sciences in the nation. Publication of the text was begun as Practice of Pharmacy in 1886 by Joseph Price Remington, professor and later dean at the University. Subsequent to his death, the copyright to this text was assigned to the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy (now Saint Joseph's University) by the heirs of Professor Remington.


Remington has provided a comprehensive source of knowledge about the science and practice of pharmacy. The book provides information to help both students and practitioners serve effectively as members of the health professions team. The 22nd edition was published in 2012.


This special bicentennial edition, edited by Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences Adeboye Adejare Ph.D., celebrates 200 years since the founding of Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in 1821. The founding of the college is regarded as the beginning of pharmacy education and modern pharmacy practice. The text also addresses modern challenges including COVID-19, substance use disorders and medical cannabis.


The 22nd edition of Remington offers a unique array of content in two volumes, covering pharmaceutical science and pharmaceutical practice. Its value is immense for students and practitioners in all areas of the discipline.


Dr. Allen is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Compounding, CEO of the Midwest Institute of Research and Technology, and Professor Emeritus of the University of Oklahoma HSC College of Pharmacy. He is a consultant to compounding pharmacists and the pharmaceutical industry.


He obtained his B.S. and M.S. in Pharmacy from the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy in 1966 and 1970, respectively. He completed a residency in hospital pharmacy at the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in Boston, MA in 1966-67. He received the Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1972.


He taught at the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy (where he opted for early retirement in 1998) where he was Professor and Chair, Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmaceutics. In 1996, he initiated the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Compounding, and serves as Editor-in-Chief. In addition, he is a consultant in pharmacy and pharmaceutics to a number of pharmaceutical companies, and writes for numerous journals and textbooks.


Dr. Allen is a Fellow of AFPE (1968), ACA (1995), APhA-APRS(1996), and IACP (1998). He received the J. Leon Lascoff Memorial Award for Outstanding Service to the Profession of Pharmacy in 1998; the highest award given by the American College of Apothecaries. He has also received the Stimulation of Research Award from the American Pharmaceutical Association (1998). He has served as a member of the U.S. Pharmacopeia Committee of Revision 1990 to 2000) and the Compounding Pharmacy Expert Committee (2000 to current; Chair from 2000 to 2010) and serves on the Nomenclature, Labeling and Safety Expert Committee (2000 to current), and has served on the USP Executive Committee. He has also served on the FDA Advisory Committee on Pharmaceutical Compounding. He has served in numerous positions in the APhA Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science and served on the APhA Board of Trustees for 1999-2000. His research interests are in the areas of drug dosage form design/development and drug stability/compatibility. He is currently working on both national and international projects involving new drug product formulations.


He has supervised 25 Masters and Ph.D. students. In addition, he has been awarded 13 patents in the field of drug formulations. He has over 100 experimental publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals; over 100 peer-reviewed experimental abstracts; 30 books, chapters and monographs; over 400 professional publications, 21 film/book reviews; co-author on 3 textbooks and sole author of 2 textbooks. His textbooks now appear in English, Portuguese, Chinese, Hebrew and Arabic. He is currently Editor-in-Chief on the 22nd edition of Remington: The Science and Practice of Pharmacy.
