Hey Cheif,

me put new battery in day of "power outage".  Terminals are clean. What do now?

Hello Robert,

Check the battery connections - remove, clean, reinstall.

Check the battery -  make sure you have a good battery... replace with a known good one if possible.

Let's start there.

Cheers.

Fellow Drifter and Vulcan Riders,

I have a 1999 1500 Drifter that recently simply stopped running.  The starting switch triggers a complete shut down of the electrical connection.  Lights and dash go immediately black after attempting start from the normal "power on" key position.  Then, a funny thing happens?  The power will come back on after a minute or two?  I have left the power switch on and tried to figure out why the "blackout" occured, and then the power will come back on?

I checked all the replaceable quick plug fuses under the seat, and they are all good to go?  What is the diagnosis here?  Any input is appreciated concerning relays and checking the connections advice!  Heck, anything, I just don't know where to start?

Thanks,

Bob

Hello Robert,

You hit the switch and nothing correct? Starter doesn't try to crank? The bike moves ok correct ?

Let's see...

1) Blown main fuse - you checked that already

2) Discharged battery - confirmed good

3) The next thing would be the starter or starter relay switch.

You have to remove the starter relay to test it. (There's also a starter circuit relay in the junction box, but you can't remove that one).

FYI the starting system consists of: starter, starter relay, clutch switch, kickstand switch, starter circuit relay, neutral switch,  engine stop switch, and starter button.

Its strange it takes 1-2 minutes for the lights to come back up... after hitting the button...

Cheers.

You put in the new battery AFTER the "power outage" right?

no, negative,

old battery was low and draining,  had left the parking light on instaed of switching to off.  charge was not holding.

Brand new battery was installed and riden about 25 miles and restarted twice.  Then, on 3rd restart, it acted up and powered off completely.  after 5 mins, the juice came back on?

IT did it again last night after riding 100 miles, stopped and started 3 times (everything worked fine).

On the fourth start in the trip, the "power outage" occured when attempting to start (key powerd on then "black out" off before I could push the starter).

Waited about 3 minutes with key switch power on, then, full power comes back on without any tinkering, full crank and START.  ????   I know the bettery terminals are clean and tight.  Looking into the starter relay now?

new batt before "power outage"

Hmmm. When new problem occurs after installation of new part,
that casts aspersions on the new part and/or installation of new part.

Do you have another battery you can hook up long enough to see if the power outage repeats?

Couldn't hurt.

what's the best way to test the starter relay, just a "check light tester" to begin aye?.

The battery is good, I tested it at purchase.  That's the thing,  I gotta wait until  it "Blacks Out " again to do a test.   Just hope  it does not zap-out at full speed.

Hello Robert,

Well the book says to remove the relay, attach a 12v battery to the pos and neg battery terminals on the relay, then connect an ohmmeter to the starter relay terminals to determine continuity... but a test light should do the same thing.

Sometimes new batteries are bad from the outset. I'd check the battery under load  - and would probably try and get another one for testing.

Hello Robert,

It doesn't work AFTER riding a while?

Two things here... a discharged battery will act the way you describe, and the rectifier may not be charging it properly. Just because a battery tests good on the bench does not mean its good under load.

When a bad battery sits a while it recharges itself enough to push the starter.... but if it isn't charging properly - bad battery or bad rectifier - it will stop even when the bike is running.

rectifier?  Uh, you mean the starter relay that's near the main fuse?   I will load test battery.

Hello Robert,

No the rectifier is what keeps the battery charged and the engine running. If it fails, the battery will discharge even while riding - and eventually the bike will quit WHILE you are riding it. Its the box on the left side of the bike just in front of the rear wheel.... unless you moved it.

Cheers.
