I'm a skater in Richmond hoping to learn some basics of ice safety this winter, after a few years of sticking to very well-skated and solid ice. Do you know of any ice safety courses locally? Or skating outings that are quite beginner friendly?

Thanks!

Hi Jennifer,

There are several members on this board that have offered courses in the past, I won't speak for anyone, but I wouldn't be surprised if something pops up this season too. In the mean time, have you checked out the online resources that are available? Jamie Hess' website is a very good place to start and has links to some other great websites.

As the season gets going, there will be places that are low-barrier to skate on, but also attract experienced skaters. For example, Arthur Park in Burlington and Lake Morey in Fairlee come to mind. If you see reports that these places are in good condition here or on their websites (Burlington Rec monitors Arthur Park and will post about it on social media and Lake Morey resort monitors Lake Morey), you have a decent chance of meeting and talking to experienced skates who are often willing to share tips and advice. If you're feeling unsure about these places don't be afraid to ask here!

Hope this helps,
Rob

Hi Jennifer,

Here's some videos from Evan Perkin's ice course from December of 2023: https://photos.app.goo.gl/WjFs7PD8hZkDkZkz7  They are definitely worth viewing.

Hi Jen,
We had a close call at a local reservoir in North Central Vermont which has inspired me to want to host a safety training here sometime in the near future when the ice is good again. I haven’t started making arrangements yet as I don’t see reliable ice in the forecast long enough to plan such a thing but if you’re and reach of Montpelier for a safety training, let’s stay in touch
