Good Afternoon Everyone,

As some of you are definitely aware by the fact that there were 11 skaters this morning, the ice on the north end of Mascoma Lake's south side  has been nothing short of life-changing in my opinion. Absolutely some of the best black ice I have ever seen. There are many hazards and I have noted them in previous posts but this is not really a post. I just wanted to share with everyone 3 images I took this morning that I think captures the reasons that I, as well as many of you, love nordic skating so much. A spectacular sunrise and amazing sky bathed groups of friends in a magical aura that was so stunning I seriously considered quitting my job in order to stay longer. Having logged nearly 300 miles already this season at great locations like Long Pond, Keiser Pond, Beaver Pond, Lonesome Lake, Grafton Pond, and Little Lake Sunapee, skating  the amazing black ice on Mascoma the last few days has been the perfect way to end this year. The warm weather starting this afternoon will put a damper on things but hopefully the pattern will shift for the long term soon enough. Until then everyone be safe and have a wonderful New Year.

Matt

Wow, great photos!  I hope to learn to skate well enough on my new Nordic long blades to have these experiences.  Thank you for sharing.

Two of us completed a perimeter skate of Goose Pond this morning after having a lovely skate on Mascoma as others have noted.  Parked at the boat landing on Goose Pond rd.  Skated north and followed absolutely beautiful smooth ice along the western shore skating in and out of the boulders.  This sidewalk was fairly uniform along the western, southern and southeast shorelines.   The northern area was textured snow ice with newer smooth plates in the middle and southern areas.  Variety of textures on the north and north east shores but still pleasant.  Was never able to poke through but please note that we did not explore the newer plates very far from shore.  We were unsure how thick the ice was until we discovered that someone had used a chainsaw to cut a hole in the ice perhaps 20’ from the western shore.  The ice was approximately 8-10”! No problem areas other than 3 pressure ridges that had formed overnight.  These were easily visible and did not prevent us from going all the way around.  Ice was getting tacky by the end of the skate.  Based on the thickness of the ice, fingers crossed that the upcoming weather event will reset this pond! Very fun!
