There is amazing 2/12-3/12 “black ice with a dusting of snow that you can easily see through . The thick ice goes from the dodge hill boat launch all the way east to the river mouth. There is also lots of thin but supportable ice in other places but the south shore is reliably thick, obviously still check transitions.this ice should hold through the day. I will attach a pin tha sows the stopping point. It’s already the best Christmas ever and I haven’t had breakfast yet!

Skated quite a bit of Wrightsville Reservoir today. There were six of us there. Getting on the first 20 feet was a bit sketchy, but had almost 2 inches of ice, with some water on the edge. After you get to the main reservoir, it was great as long as you stay away from the inflows, and the outflow, with the exception of, the northwest corner where it gets narrow. Under inch and a half and even some water visible.
An eighth of an inch of snow makes it hard to read the ice, but didn’t impede skating at all today it was very smooth and consistent with rare hazards. Not black ice, but quite delightfully smooth I think there’s a chance it might be still good tomorrow morning but I wouldn’t trust it After it gets above freezing for any length of time. More tricky access
than Molly’s Falls, but smoother

I haven’t seen any posting about the safety class that Evan Perkins led on Saturday but I want a big thank you For his time and great information! I might not have felt confident in crossing a relatively weak section on Wrightsville reservoir today had not taken.
Reading the ice, ice, formation, ice crystals, sound of ice relating to depth, Not making assumptions about the color of ice. If you wanna your grip on extended your good luck, and not swimming, unless you want to, adding some science to your safety whenever you get the chance. Thanks again and here’s a couple pictures from the class.
