Moore reservoir on the border of Vermont New Hampshire in Waterford Vermont had about half to 3/4 of an inch of snow on it yesterday evening. This morning some of that snow had blown off overnight in a few small areas. The ice on the whole reservoir is mostly snow ice that froze during the snowstorm many days back, and a huge plate of black ice that covers the main body of the reservoir as you head out a mile or two from the dam. The black ice section is the part that has been cleared in a few areas, it measured from 2 inches to 3 inches today, probably thicker where the snow has been off the longest. There is a long clear section right along the dam and some lanes that are opening up just off of the dam. The best Skating was a mile long band of black ice that was blown off because there was a wet crack which was absorbing the snow. That band of black ice is best access off of old Waterford Road which is just a few hundred feet from exit 43 on route 93. If you drive to the end of the road there is a public parking lot and if you skate directly out into the lake Through some drifted snow you will come across this large band which pretty much goes Lake wide . Out by the band there are also some sections of patchwork black ice showing that may blow off enough to create some skating lanes by the end of the day. Any place on the lake that the wind has drifted the snow, it can be skated through but I would highly recommend having double poles if you want to do exploring. On the wind protected north shore the snow is about a half inch deep and easy to skate through on top of textured ice, the caveat Here is that the ice under this non-windblown snow ranges from 2 1/2 to 1 3/4 thick today . It is thinnest off of points. But we skated many miles along that shoreline and did not find any ice thinner than that, although it probably exists. It should thicken a little bit tonight but not much because it is snow-covered. For those interested in skating through the snow there is many many miles of Skating to be had a long that shore. Not the wide-open expense of black ice I was hoping for, but at least it’s something and quite beautiful out there as well. For safety gear, and check often particularly on ice that is snow-covered. The black ice should probably range from 2 1/2 to 4 Inches by morning where it is exposed. A note of caution, the farther east on the Reservoir the more current there is so check often near points and constructions. Remote. Wild. Beautiful. Also I heard secondhand that mirror Lake and Lake Wentworth in the lakes region of New Hampshire near Squam Were rained on at the end of the storm and should be thick enough to skate by tomorrow, that’s all I know.
