I don’t know if it will hold up. We need to check in the morning.
Four of us had a fun little hour, and a half of going back and forth across the bay between Rock Point, and Apple Tree Point, in Burlington on the broad lake this morning. It was an upwind push and a down wind run, on black ice with a few surprises of shell ice or brief rough sections. Those were enough to keep us from wanting to go for all out speed on the downwinder. However it was enough speed to be very entertaining.

We stayed inside those two points because of all the open water on the lake, and the need to stay on ice which is locked in by land. If it wasn’t locked in, it was moving downwind, and breaking up. In just a half hour we noticed the water was closer to us. Hopefully the wind will die down tonight and we will still have something to play on in the morning. There is some very nice black ice out there, and the scenery is wonderful.

To elaborate on Diana’s post, the ice was 3+ inches thick - I didn’t go all the way through when testing as it wasn’t necessary. Very pleasant black ice but there are heated over cracks that slow you down between open black ice stretches. Diana’s track shows the outer limit of what we were comfortable skating.

I ran out to rock point again at sunset to check the plate and it held up with little or no wave erosion today. Wind is forecast at sw <10kts, so I think this locked in plate will hold until tomorrow.

The skating was good, and what snow was there was not “grabby.” I plan to skate at 8:30 tomorrow. It is great skating locally. Not sure I would drive an hour each way for it, but it sounds like this is the only game in town.

Here is a photo from this evening of the same plate. Apple tree point in the background (photo from rock point preserve trail).

Great find! Thanks for scoping it!

Two of us skated for an hour at the end of the day, it was beautiful.

There's a long open crack straight out/perpendicular from shore that wasn't worth trying to cross. There is plenty of great ice to explore without going on the other side of it (which would be the apple tree point side).

Tonight's calm wind and cold will mean it will be very nice for at least the first half of the day on Saturday.

I would like to meet with a group to skate Saturday am. Where are you parking and entering the ice?

Thanks Charlene, this post deepens & expands on the original reporting, so great. Sometimes people say they hesitate to post when someone else has reported on an area, but more photos and additional information are great, also conditions change frequently as we all know so a different time of day's report is useful too.  Hope you all get to enjoy this nice piece of ice again before it's gone.

Leddy Park and Beach is one of Burlington's public beaches in the north end of town, and the site of an indoor skating rink :) Really.

For the outdoor skating, park in the giant parking lot and walk down the hill past the rink to the beach, about a 3 minute walk. Then crunch across the snow and rubble out to the ice, another three minutes. Then skate!
